It’s fine … for now
|
If you are looking to get into sales this is a great place to start. It is very clear the type of people that typically get promoted from within and I do not fit that bill. Drink the koolaid if you want, it will get you the farthest with this company. The was this company is structured and run makes it very hard for me to feel positive about my future here or for the future of the company. Customers often complain about management and corporate does nothing about it- makes you feel like they don’t really care about the customer experience at the end of the day as long as the store is making money. It just feels odd that they have the sales team break their back to go above and beyond for people when they don’t truly care.
Hardest part of the job is not ever being able to speak up on things that go wrong, there’s a very “well that’s how it goes here” mentality. It’s really tough working under people who are less proactive about issues and are only reactive.

Typical day- follow up with potential clients, stay alert for new clients to walk in as someone else will jump on them, clean displays/bathrooms/floors.
Workplace culture- like a used car lot. Unless you’re full time plan on making the hourly minimum. Example: if I work with client on a Monday then they come back on a day I wasn’t working to place the order, commission is split. You need to watch the door like a hawk to get a turn to work with someone.
As qualified as I was to work in the industry, there was no way to make a decent living without being uncomfortably aggressive and cut throat with co-workers.
Most enjoyable part- designing, occasional camaraderie with co-workers.

Very hard to sell enough at the retail level to make a living.

It’s a supportive culture. Teamwork. I found it to be supportive.

When I wasn’t working with clients, I followed up with potential clients, created designs for clients, filed paperwork, had chores in the store.

Working here is like basically being in business for yourself with the support and the structure of The Tile Shop. As long as you think about it as if you're running a business you will be fine. If you treat this position like an hourly job that you clock in and out of be prepared for failure. If you know that you're an overachiever who doesn't get paid you're just due at your hourly job I would highly recommend you give this company a try.

Gorgeous product and large selection to design with. Customers were wonderful to work with (for the most part of course) and were happy with the size of the showroom and attentiveness of employees, they were usually ignored at other similar stores. Every customer greeted when entering the showroom as long as it was possible. Was enabled to improve my in-depth knowledge of tile installation to my design experience from the training received when starting working there.
A lot of Corporate micro-management of employees leaves store management with little to no control. The added "busy work" required by corporate to oversee from afar became unattainable at the end of 2023 if one wanted to keep up with assisting customers well, keeping the showroom in good order, clean and just basically organized. Showrooms in the NY/NJ area have become extremely under-staffed because Corporate obviously does not understand the wide differentials of their showroom demographics.

Micro-management, Employees (not all) that are not considerate of each other, Issues with employees are created by the undo pressures put upon them, Team Work within showroom locations does not seem to be important to upper management

What is the best part of working at the company?
Very dirty work environment. Consistently lifting heavy. While the co-workers will be exemplary. Shipping management will give misdirection on simple questions. management will be steadfast in their decision to never give honest answers.

Knowing the work you do is quite a lot of heavy lifting, and timed.

Do" as I say, not as I do," is the most common.

Management was never there always placed the blame on the design team never made warehouse manager do their job not a great place to work it if you want to have a steady life and threatened on multiple occasions, if you go to HR, they will fire you and yes, it can happen with a regional manager that also plays the blame game I would not recommend anybody at the tile shop in Deptford, New Jersey as long as current management is there management and regional manager makes it a toxic workplace

Great pay if you aren’t in subsidy but if you work at the Depford tile shop, you will always be in subsidy
|
Management and HR are not for the designers therefore self

It was Christmas. The environment was festive Christmas tree for the animal foundation stayed up well after New Year’s.
