I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the most dedicated, hardest working people I’ve ever met. However, as a previous leader, some of my fellow leadership lacked basic business ethics and morals. Be prepared to work 65+ hours a week (interns included) with no real benefits. There’s a handful of people making a decent salary and a lot of people making little to nothing and significantly below market value for their position. The workplace is TOXIC. You’ll leave with an amazing skill set and ability to multitask but the toxic environment is beyond draining. The media and entertainment business is tough, but this is the worst place I’ve ever worked. If you can survive here for a while you can survive anywhere. I.E. take your talents somewhere else, don’t stay here, use it as stepping stone or skip this company all together. I was mistaken. While BDO’s mission to help connect black people with quality healthcare is noble and worth praise, the company’s execution of this mission leaves much to be desired. The company has a massive online following which lets it get away with a lot of practices and behaviors that it shouldn’t be able to. It's clear that the company is far more interested in getting money from pharma companies and grants than anything else. Leadership is either far too involved or not involved enough on projects and doesn’t support a quality work/life balance by expecting staff to be available 24/7 and on holidays. As a small company, you’ll often be asked to do tasks well outside of your job description/pay scale/abilities, but depending on your perspective, that can either be positive or negative. But too much of any good things can become bad. Lastly, there’s a long list of questionable ethics and company values that start with leadership and trickle all the way down and result in built-up frustration, low team morale, and even public shaming. For a company that is supposed to be about informing the African American community, it’s management really had no idea, or real interests, in that goal. My first year was very thrilling and got the opportunity to connect with the Indianapolis community as the station is really diverse! However overtime you notice because this is an entertainment/sales industry there definitely seems to be a high turnover rate. Also their is much needed signs of better organizational, communication and management skills. This is definitely a position for younger adults (recent HS graduates and college students). I always felt like people were out to get me and they were trying to find an excuse to rid of my salary because they had to get rid of salaries because they are bleeding out. Unfortunately it was also one of the most disappointing saddening and mentally damaging times as well. Radio One is where I learned that Personal Integrity is not always appreciated in the work place. When everyone else is cutting throats its not wise to stick your neck out even for good reasons.
