Rigid time structure with very minimal tolerance. Very Old School management. They seem to think they are doing all employees a favor by employing them. 1 week vacation/year and 2 sick days. I worked at Utah Medical full-time (More than a year) People have never been more motivated and excited about going job hunting!You'll get some really broad experience that will look good on a resume, but it will be hard to land a new job, because your experience is all old and irrelevant in today's work force.A few good people to be around (as long as you can avoid the negative conversation topics Look at your respective department for the most visible cons.Sales/Marketing - No commission with a lousy salary and long hours, forced to use antiquated sales techniques, you'll have multiple managers in your time due to high turn-over, don't count on good training (go read these ancient books and journal articles and look at the brochures), and despite what they may tell you, you won't travel very much (and certainly won't have decent accommodations if you do travel).HR - you won't have any influence in the morale or employee relations, the CEO will dictate everything you do, all you do will be based on numbers, and you can't care for the employees' well-being (they are treated as dispensable so don't make any friends.Engineering - Most of the department doesn't have a degree in engineering, there is very little (and old) lab equipment and resources to work with, all technology is like a blast from the past, expected to know everything (again, no training other than reading procedures), little contact with manager(s) (stretched too thin), no accountability, and never get to do actual engineering. In fact, you'll likely spending most of your time wondering if you even want to be an engineer anywhere else.Maintenance - Expected to know everything from facilities, to HVAC, to production equipment maintenance, to molding machines (some new, some ancient), only get paid for one of those positions, and be able to fix every piece of equipment rather than buy new parts/equipment.Now for the general information:Company Culture - It is a very negative atmosphere, everything is extremely micromanaged by the CEO. Most office employees are tasked with two or three different jobs (sometimes more), because the CEO doesn't want to hire anybody to replace those leaving (and you won't get a huge raise to go with the extra responsibility). No cell phones allowed, so that you don't steal/share any company confidential information (really because the CEO likes to micromanage and be in control of everything). Training is a joke for office employees. The technology is old and extremely inefficient and frustrating to use, and don't count on that changing because the CEO is proud of being able to stay (somewhat) operable on so little cost. The mentality is that you are already being paid, so time isn't money; spend all day fixing a $10 part, just don't spend any capital. Decisions are often made on a whim with emotional drive rather than objective reasoning.Benefits - It all looks good on paper, but the insurance company won't tell the providers what the (contract) allowed amount is for any of the procedures, so the provider just guesses and you get hit with the extra cost (and it will always cost you out of pocket). They say there is not really a network for dental, so just go to whichever dentist you want; really, every dentist is considered out of network, so you end up paying a ton, even for 6 month cleanings. Sick time is used as a reward. If you don't use the tiny bit that they give you, then you can have more (if you are on the nice list, as determined by the CEO, again, micromanaged). Retirement plan matches up to X% of your salary (fine print: matches a percentage of X% of your salary).General Salary - The company chooses to hire young people so that they can start them way below average salary and then slowly increase to an unhappy medium, staying fairly stagnant from there on out.When I started working here, I told some people that I hated it. They would all tell me that "there are always things that you won't like about any job" and that I should pretty much just get over it. As other reviewers said, the CEO/dictator micromanages every position. This would be fine if he was a reasonable manager, however he clearly lacks communication and social skills. He also hires family members and gives them special treatments. This act of nepotism is supposed to be kept a secret. I was warned about this company before I started working here but decided to go for it since I found the products interesting. Bad mistake. I believe I aged 10 years in the short 6 months that I worked there. I learned firsthand just how bad a bad employer can be. During my time at UTMD, it felt like the leader was a controlling megalomaniac more concerned with boosting eps than growing the business. With little to no new products, they were saving their way to growth.
