What it lacks in technology, Westamerica Bank makes up for with the human touch

Friendly, seasoned, experienced bankers, make up the WAB culture. Many are called “lifers” as they work at WAB right up to retirement. Small-town community bank feel and the customers love the pencil-and-paper, old-fashioned human Banking style approach, so the concept is a low-technology formula that is tried and true.
|
The low-tech draw for the customers is what makes WAB a pen-and-paper-centric Bank. No Internet in the branches means no emails. Options for other channels of communication are slow and are phone, fax or inter-office. Pay is not competitive with other financial instructions. No room for growth. Little to no support of employee growth and/or advancement. Ancient software programs. Lots of handwriting. We’re talking no ability to fill-in PDF forms; instead, print and complete by hand, a procedure all WAB employees come to know well. Culture can be lackluster and underwhelming with seemingly no pride in their work. Hard to self-motivate and go above m-and-beyond when surrounded by “What’s the point?” attitudes.

Make sure win, interviewing candidates to fill roles within the bank, that you are forthcoming early on about the lack of career development, advancement opportunities, human touch over technology approach, and a be seen and not heard type of environment where ideas and feedback will fall on deaf ears so WAB is not a great fit for any perspective employee looking to change the world, or even the Bank.
