Now things have changed for the worse and it’s not getting any better. Stack ranking is destroying teams and work morale. Instead of focusing on collective goals the team members are prioritizing less important but individual achievements to outperform their peers anyway they can, resulting in a toxic work environment. Managers are scrambling to come up with senseless ways to avoid their employees to end up on the forced “low performer” ranking. Avalara is moving most roles to India in the disguise of “performance management”. The constant and detrimental changes have created a culture where nobody is speaking up any more for the fear of retaliation and be labeled as “low performer”. This toxic work environment has spread to all teams now. The internal Gallup survey doesn’t mean anything anymore and is used as a tool to fire managers or target teams that can be candidates for “low performer” investigations to meet the 10% layoff quota. The new CPO and the HR organization have reached the highest level of incompetence with the constant contradictions and ever-changing information. HR people managers are completely ineffective and can’t give any clear guidance on any topics anymore. Our India HR is the most passive-aggressive organization I have ever experienced. Random executive initiatives with random deadlines are forced on teams with no feedback whatsoever. This has created an unhealthy balance of what is really important versus product development. C-levels and SVPs seems to be completely oblivious to the detrimental changes and are more interested in performative high-fives dances in the public forums instead of addressing the abyss the company is heading towards when it comes to work culture. There is no leadership or seriousness to create healthy environment. Leaders are just using their contacts ( you rub my back and will do the same for you) to save their jobs. Low cost jobs are moving to Pune while high cost ( directors ,Sr. Directors , VP) jobs are getting promoted and getting huge bonuses. One removal of VP or Sr director in Brighton can lead to saving atleast 5 jobs in Brighton. They were bought by Vista and everything was over at that point. Gallup polls that are meaningless and are all show no go. All this OPAH stuff this is all a we have a culture. The silent PIP's that are taking place really is why not pay severance no reason to stress quit all they employees since February. They care about you. Avalara was wonderful until Vista took the reins. Leadership, the directors in the compliance practice are absolutely untrustworthy. They don’t understand the business, they don’t care about the staff, and hilariously coach you through Gallup surveys to get a good scores. All of the jobs are going to India, and they have this mindset that all tax is built the same. It’s not a McDonald’s, you can’t make the tax fit into a terrible platform and expect .10 employees in India to do the same level of work. People are getting laid off after years of service, to be replaced by overseas employees.
