Fast paced, challenging, well compensated, sink or swim

Chesapeake is a very fast paced, challenging place to work and is great for engineers right out of college to get a wide range of experience fast and to be well compensated for it. The big downsides are that as the company goes through financial hardship, the culture and management team has gone downhill fast. They have begun to worry about saving themselves rather than the company.

Most field employees are good people that work hard and have each other’s back. Middle management is hit and miss. Upper management is absolutely terrible.

A Shell of what it used to be

CHK used to be a desirable workplace, with excellent benefits & pay, now it is miserable. From 12k employees to 1,600. Layoffs & pointless moves the norm for 7+ years. Employee's needs? Not their problem. They do not care about people. This place likely won't exist in a year. Very sad, the glory days are long over & there really is no path back. All the assets will be gone soon. It was good while it lasted

Hiring/promotion/bonuses given on personality and who you know/like. Horrible management of money and business decisions at every level. No recognition of true value just what sounds good in a meeting. Pay and benefits are good, but don't expect to get promoted by being good at your job and a hard worker. Dont get stuck in the golden handcuffs

Was a great place to work before the downturn
|
Chesapeake was the THE place to get a job back in the day. Compensation and benefits were outstanding. Then the downturn hit and new top brass and layoffs. Ran into several instances where managements “word” proved to be fruitless. The perks started disappearing and layoffs started. Never knew if you were going to have a job day to day. The people were great and job was always keeping you on your toes, just part of working in the oilfield. Sad the way everything turned out. Hindsight is 20/20 but more money should have been put towards balancing the books when times were good instead of growth. Things may have turned out different for them.

Fantastic company that is going through hard times
|
Chesapeake was by far the best place I have ever worked. I would still be there if I had not left due to fear of another layoff. CHK had an environment of freedom and constant learning. I worked for the best boss and great people. The drawback to CHK was their HR department, which you couldn’t trust and the fact they are going through bankruptcy. If the company was financially stable, I would go back there ASAP.

Good company to work for if don't mind change and volatility
|
Really enjoyed my time at Chesapeake. It's a good company with a healthy culture. Low oil and gas prices and too much debt drove the company to bankruptcy. They will comeback but need much better commodity prices to survive.
Chesapeake has a world class campus, great benefits, and great co-workers. Also, constant change, regular layoffs, and uncertain future.
