For starters, I spent over ten years at Carter's and my individual work group was fantastic, hence my tenure. My advice for management is as follows. The HR org at Carter's needs to be reduced and reigned in. The company in total is wholly dominated by HR, so much so, that employees at all levels of the organization are afraid of the HR team in total. Those HR team members who do foster good working relationships with the teams don't last because they don't "fit in" (based upon speaking with former HR individuals after they left the company). They conduct baseless investigations with little to no facts, and accuse employees of wrongdoing without receiving proper training on how to conduct such investigations. And even if individuals are exonerated, there are predatory actions taken and all aspects of an individual's work are questioned, leaving employees to feel as though they must be perfect, and that there is a target on their back. The HR org also promotes internally at higher rates and to higher titles than other parts of the business are allowed to. The overall company message of "do more with less" is disproportionally applied to certain groups vs. others, and challenging this would almost certainly lead to termination. The company is run well from a business perspective, and some within the organization are truly great people who care about their teams and coworkers. During my tenure I personally had short interactions with CEO Mike Casey, CFO Richard Westenberger, and Treasurer Sean McHugh, and found them all to be incredible people who care about the teams and the company as a whole. I truly can't think of anything negative to say about them as people or leaders. However, I feel their love and care does not trickle down to the rest of the organization.

The Worst
|
|
Not a high stress job
|
Carters just keeps getting worse and worse. The micromanaging is at an insane level but HR won’t listen to any complaints
DM’s just do whatever they want and won’t listen to store management about how things actually impact the store
Nothing ever works- the technology is constantly under maintenance or just not working at all, good luck accessing any KPI reporting because your hourly reads will be 2 hours behind
Very heavy on selling the Credit Card which has a high interest rate and lackluster benefits
Continuously cuts payroll so it’s impossible making full time hours or getting anything done in the store
Only ‘allowed’ in the store 30 minutes before open so the store is always going to be filthy and any moves have to be made during business hours with customers in the store
If you’re an SOS store they don’t want you to actually try and stop theft and with the payroll hours cut you’ll be in the store alone anyway so there’s not much you can do to get out of the SOS program
Shipment will randomly be heavy with no warning and you’ll be overrun with the same product that’s not selling
They say you can grow within the company and internal candidates take priority but that’s not accurate-they’ll keep you in your position just so they don’t have to replace you
Dress code is crazy

Let store management actually own the business instead of telling them what they can and can’t do. Store management teams know what’s going on in the store/with the customer better than anyone so you should start listening to them.

First years were so enjoyable. Then new District and Regional leaders changed the temperature of the stores. A Gotcha mentality. An employee's worth was based solely on credit card acquisitions. Unrealistic goals for associates and management.

Limit the micromanaging. Allow individuals to succeed without needing to conform to one way of doing things. Following Policy and Procedure is so important but where someone places a paperclip is not. Embrace your team and recognize their strengths. So not focus on the negative.

Fun place to work

Small departments with lots of long-term employees create a family feel.
Several events throughout the year that give the workplace a more relaxed feel.
Atmosphere is mostly relaxed. Management is approachable. They will listen and consider suggestions.
Generous PTO alotment
|
Lots of favoritism and you have to push to learn more.
Health insurance is expensive and not cost-effective
