Enjoyed the work, the excitement, the guys, the pay and benefits. Management was fair, and itâs easy to advance for someone who isnât afraid to work hard. Time away from family ultimately led me to quit a promising career in oilfield cementing. 10 on 3 off schedule and 14 on 7 off were most common. Boom and bust nature of oil business means we traveled to where it was busy. Lived in a hotel more than my own home, my workmates were my second family. If I was a young guy who wanted a career that pays well without going to college then I would learn the oilfield trade at a place like Halliburton. Their training is top notch. I knew guys in their early twenties making $120k a year and paying cash for brand new pickup trucks. I made 75k my 3rd year. Great benefits.

Great benefits but you're just a number to the higher ups.

I worked for the Baroid PSL... Their mentality, "You're lucky to have a job here". Very little support from upper management and they have an "everyone is replaceable attitude". Raises are few and far between and are of little substance when they do come around. When the customer values you more than your employer... that speaks in volume.
