One of the worst jobs I ever had
|
|
There isn't. I'm not about to give this abusive corporation any props whatsoever.
|
Meredith is a twisted corporation unto itself. Very little here is quite like anywhere else.
For example, video creation is an unfamiliar landscape for those who have worked in a past production job. Two of the company’s studios utilize photographers as videographers, and none know anything about lighting and sound. The Des Moines facility won’t even allow productions to use audio.
The camera people have zero pride in their work. Too often, I received shaky footage where the camera operator didn’t bother redoing the shot. And forget about trying to upgrade the quality. No one there wants to improve but will fight like hell to retain their substandard skills.
My executive producer didn’t have a single producer credit to her name. Her daily misguided decisions reflected that. As an example, on what was described as a “multimillion-dollar” branded integration, I was required to work as a producer, director, food stylist, prop master, and production assistant. In another example, she pushed to do a cooking show which would require four prep kitchens, four food stylists, and 12 recipes to be created in a single day.
Bad ideas such as this and a lack of skill are found throughout the video department. The majority of the video executives have little to no understanding of the production process. There are others in supervisory roles with marginal experience who are assigned to seasoned producers. In one instance, I mentioned basic film/TV production acronyms to my supervisor, such as SOT and MOS, and the individual had no idea what I was talking about.
Decisions are often made by committee: multiple people from various departments, or “dependencies,” as they like to call it in their over-used corporate speak. These are individuals outside of the many video divisions who have zero production experience, nor would they need it for what is supposed to be their jobs. But here their input is given equal or greater weight. For example, when producing a chicken recipe, one person from a separate department insisted that I exclude shots of raw poultry because such footage was deemed “too sexual.” Another bewildering decision centered on canceling a tart recipe due to the double meaning of the word “tart.”
Post-production is a fiasco. Some video is sent to India for editing. What should take just a few hours to assemble would often draw out for weeks. The department as a whole is underbudgeted and understaffed with uncreative internal editors whose end product fails to impress.
As mentioned in other reviews here, racial, religious, and age bias runs rampant. The powers-that-be adopt liberal catch-phrases as excuses for discriminatory behavior. For example, it was common to hear that a hands-and-pans recipe for an ethnic dish couldn’t be produced because it risked exposing the company to accusations of co-opting another culture. Insert eye-roll emoji here. Yet, they had no problem making a video with a Pacific Islander telling people how to make an Ashkenazi meal for a Jewish holiday. These instances only scratch the surface of the endless ways in which prejudice rears its ugly head at Meredith.
Mental, emotional, and financial wellbeing are not words that could ever be used in association with the company. And if one were to voice concern about an issue, it would fall on deaf ears. I tried to do so on four separate occasions, and I encountered the same outcome.
The company is a culture of sycophants, with everyone sucking up to the person in the next highest rank. It causes fear throughout the company and a lack of originality. For example, the head honcho in my department would push everyone to chase their tails. “What’s the big search term now?” As a result, video creation was always reactive rather than proactive.
Working at Meredith taught me two big lessons:
1. Never accept a job just because I need the money.
2. Listen when friends who have worked at a company tell me it’s a toxic wasteland.

Didn't pay eligible bonus amount, your bonus payment depends on your 'closeness' to Manager
|
|
Work Life balance
Free transport and food
|
The company didn't pay bonus to employees who quit after Covid began as it had deferred hike, bonus and promotion. It is understandable that Covid affected the organisation financially and hence the payments were deferred. However, bonus is a reward for employee's effort in the year gone by and he/she rightly deserves that amount. It is only fair that organisation pay bonus even when the employee has quit or at least when the financial situation improves. Just because bonus is paid at end of the cycle, employees shouldn't be denied that amount due to sudden turn of events. In fact, in the offer letter bonus is included as part of CTC. While in the Relieving letter the company stated that we won't be eligible for any payments that it would make in future as if employees would go at it's doors with a begging bowl.
Another instance that I want to highlight is that that some employees were paid bonus (during per-Covid years) even after putting down their papers. If you are close to your manager then the rules and policies can be bent here.

Overall good experience
|
|
Team members I worked with are amazing.
Great growth and transparency from leadership.
Digital division excelled and met its goals every quarter.
Employees are encouraged to learn and grow.
|
HR processes, policies and personnel are not effective, making both hiring and firing employees a terrible experience.
Annual comp increases and promotions are rare.
In office policy after COVID not effective.

Address issues with how HR treats employees and managers, as well as the hiring and firing processes. Stop attempting to force everyone back into offices, especially in digital roles where there are more benefits to remote workers.

Corporate but it is what you make it

- freedom (work/life balance is strong)
- ease of expectations
- tuition reimbursement

- anti-WFH culture rooted in archaic leadership values
- little room for career growth (no real sense of career direction/mentorship)
- cheesy corporate culture

Far worse media companies exist.
|
|
The company is guided by a strong human resources department that may seem stifling and overreaching, but actually saves it's behind from disastrous executive decisions time and again.
|
Far worse media companies exist, but Meredith is something of a wolf in sheep's clothing. There's more to it than the cheerfulness of Better Homes & Gardens. Managers at the top are perfect gentlemen. You'll never feel the dagger.
