You gain experience working for a small, local paper. Other reporters were often a pleasure to work with.

No promotion, no chance of raises, you have to deal with constant turnover. Not to mention this can be a toxic place to work given all of that.

Good place to start a career, but Gatehouse sucks

It's a fast-paced environment for reporters, which is good to get your feet wet in a lot of areas, but there was almost no editing, so it's tough to learn anything that you can't pick up on your own.

The copy desk was completely disrespected and outsourced when Gatehouse took ownership. Good for them for keeping the paper alive, I guess, but I'm not sure the company cares at all about the region this paper has been covering for so long.
