Horrible pay and dishonest training
|
Culture is toxic, pay is pennies or non at all on some contracts. Dangle carrots in your face & expect you to be a workhorse for checks that end up less than minimum wage. Don’t care about people- just sell sell sell for them. Turnover is horrible.

This job was WONDERFUL in the beginning. But a REALLY BAD MANAGER made it a NIGHTMARE. Don't you dare complain about your bad manager to HR - and SCI has a ton of them - because they will both try to make you quit by making your job harder. Beware. Don't work here.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Truly is the best of the corporate funeral service world. Obviously lots of room for process improvements. The best is integrated programs instead of individual ones to force duplicate date entry. This allows you to focus on families and selling over administrative work that an Admin should be doing.
MeM for creating funeral stationary is the best in the industry. A solid independent firm is preferable but if you have to go corporate try SCI or SCI Direct if you can handle large volumes of calls.
What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Layers of redundant management and the dreaded JD Power score where a family can ding you if it happened to rain on the day of their loved one’s funeral funeral, something to do with a cemetery, or religious venue which is clearly out of your control. They have given away the house on many occasions rather than just confronting a “karen” family.
What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Teamwork and a vast array of resources to utilize. Especially for high profile services. This is not matched by any other entity in the industry. You will get support if you request.
What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy, from the time you arrive until the time you leave.

The best part of the job was helping families. I truly loved that part. But working with the staff there (I worked at for different locations then a sister company) is intolerable.

Extremely poor management who will ignore emails, text messages or phone calls when seeking guidance. Lack of accountability and communication. The workplace culture is toxic and judgmental. Funeral directing is easy, however the coworkers are what will make the job miserable. Interns are overwhelmed and will get minimal support from the sponsors who have a legal obligation to them. Please seek another funeral provider before applying.

I felt a sense of satisfaction when I was able to help grieving families through making final arraingments.
|
I worked 8a-5p, M-F, with one weekend a month on duty at the funeral home. I learned a LOT about the death care industry in my role as a Family Services Counselor; Service Corporation International gave me every opportunity to succeed. However, their claim that they do not ‘cold call’ people to find customers is bogus. Their process is intended to create customers out of the grieving family members, by getting them to think about making their own arrangements. This is done in a several step process, so as not to come across as insensitive. However, it felt unprofessional to me; approaching a grieving family and attempting to get them to purchase funeral arrangements for themselves went against my code of ethics. There is a STRONG sense of pressure to call as many people as possible in a day (referred to as ‘prospecting’). During these calls, you are expected to always make an appointment with the person you called. However, some people need time (in some cases, months or years) to think through the process of making their own funeral arrangements before they will make an appointment. The most enjoyable part of the job was actually presenting products to families and helping them choose the best option for themselves. However, you are expected to upsell any client to buy things that they may not want or need.

Pressure to sell, even if someone is not ready to buy, pressure to make 50-100 cold calls per day, pressure to get appointments from everyone that you actually talk to, pressure to upsell your clients even if it’s something they don’t want or need.
