The people are great HR can't be trusted
|
The Baltimore HR team are called Employee Advocates. They can't be trusted they are for the company only. This is why i am no longer there.
I loved my job and the people i worked with. Every day was new challenge and i was compensated well. But once I became a target for one specific manager and the head of Baltimore HR, my days were numbered.
Overall it's not a bad place to work. Keep it professional and remember no one is truly a friend. 30 years and everyone believed the worse and turned their backs on me.

Unfair pay, no WLB, and no support
|
The firm does not care about associates' learning/training yet has expectations that are too high for the salary. Absolutely no work-life balance. Toxic culture with the management.

Old school work environment. No flexibility. Still referred to as “secretaries”.
|
This is a challenging place to work. They gave me my first job opportunity after being out of the work force so I appreciate that immensely. Unfortunately there are a bunch of white men who treat women like secretaries from the 1950s.

Be prepared to fend for yourself
|
Training is very minimal. If you can learn quickly, on the fly, or from your mistakes, you'll survive, because they don't spend much time on training.
Several departments are quick to dump other associate questions off on to another department, even when it doesn't pertain to anything your department handles. It's hard to advance or even just change departments, when you're required to let your manager know every time you post out to another position. As well as Directors have the ability to block you from leaving. You get treated differently after that, that's not just personal experience either, I've seen it happen in several others associates, and different departments. Most have left Stifel all together after that.

Great mentor relationship - low pay
|
I worked in the Advertising & Graphics department for nearly 5 years. On the plus side, I learned more from my manager there than anyone in my career. She was an excellent writer, and I learned a great deal about the industry, compliance, products, etc. On the downside, there was an extremely negative person in the department who got along with no one. Management did very little to correct the situation. Pay was also very low, with only small cost of living adjustments annually. While bonuses increased with longevity, you couldn't build your salary.

Hi stress on the trading floor. Eat what you kill mentality. Lots of turnover. A few guys that are lifers and they rule the floor. We had 3 suicides in a 6 month span at one point. I’m sure there was some pressure from home but work situation did not help.

Great place to work
|
If you’re looking for a regional firm feel, Stifel is the right place for you. Stifel continues to grow through recruitment and acquisitions. Stifel’s management is supportive and offers growth opportunities. Stifel is generally supportive of all employees and takes care of employees. You do have to work to be recognized

Poor compensation and career advancement compared to the rest of the industry
|
Great opportunity to learn and understand the wealth management industry first hand, but little benefit otherwise. The day to day tasks are more or less boring and repetitive, but you do get exposure to the financial sector at large which is a plus. That being said, Stifel has no real system in place to advance someone from Client Service Associate to Financial Advisor, or any other position for that matter.
