Leadership pointing fingers and not taking accountability for another round of layoffs
Still some great people, not current leadership
This organization went through a change in leadership a couple of years ago, when the former CEO left - along with much of his executive team. It has also just gone through a merger with a much smaller organization. The board appointed the founder of that org (then our strategy person) as Interim CEO, but never did any other type of recruitment before making him permanent (I guess that’s what happens when one of your BFFs is on the board). This current CEO immediately laid off two-thirds of the staff citing financial woes and shut down a major product (one that generated a reserve that we’ve been surviving on), invested entirely in a smaller product that generated mostly foundation funding (which no surprise he founded), and then renamed the entire company to his organization’s name. Even though it took a major lift from our IT team, etc. he said it was necessary for funding. Fast forward to today, we are now hearing that no major funders have come in, we will run out of money (our reserves from the 1st product), and more lay offs are coming. Ironically, HR did a whole salary compensation ‘study’ last year - where it was revealed most of the exec team made over 200K and the CEO more than double that. Yes, we are a nonprofit. He continues to blame the former leadership for the fundraising woes but doesn’t take responsibility for not being a good fundraiser (see earlier review). Also - he was on the same exec team people keep blaming but never took blame for anything that happened. Just continued to point fingers and lead us to this point. So disappointing.

Avoid At All Cost
They provide a decent benefit package
The CEO just looks for his own personal benefit and personal success in a non-profit company. He'll make promises to you and say that you're valued, but will let go of you as it's a "hard decision". The jobs start okay, but eventually the demands get heavier and the berating starts. I wish I never worked here. It feels like a precious year of my life wasted. Even my final paycheck has been missing and the "HR team" has ignored me. Maybe it's because they have a huge amount of costs and barely any savings that they're disregarding the team. My recommendation is to go an actual company that cares about your financial security and you as a person.

Be Small, Think Less, Just Smile
Some people are able to hang onto their humanity.
One Degree’s primary metric for community impact remains page views, which are conveniently misrepresented as people served. Impact is not the point. Rather, this insular, turbulent nonprofit is little more than an ego vehicle for the CEO. The incompetence I witnessed was breathtaking. Work that would easily be completed in a few weeks at a functioning organization meandered for months. After major funders and clients walked away, a merger was entered into with minimal due diligence and resulted in spectacular failure and multiple rounds of layoffs. I can’t count how many haphazard business model pivots were announced, only to silently fizzle within weeks. The sole operating principal I could discern was that the CEO thinks he invented this field and is deeply deserving of more attention and money. Ignore the job description. The assignment at One Degree is to be small, think less, just smile. If you can deliver consistent flattery and dull compliance to the CEO, you’ll do well.

Less than meets the eye
It's mission-driven, and some of the folks are good to work with
I worked here for three years and was very disappointed with my experience. The organization is disorganized and chaotic. The CEO is also very incompetent and makes many decisions driven by his ego, which makes the place really toxic. All decisions are driven by personal nonsense rather than the best interests of the organization, the staff, and the community it says it is about. For example, the organization recently returned to its inferior resource platform. It's poorly designed and much more challenging to use than the competition without even a 1/10 of the functionality.
