Walk the talk
|
|
Amazing colleagues, great culture, great dataset to work with. Impressive engineering behind some of their pipelines.
|
In my opinion, there seemed to be instances where managerial positions were generating projects as a means to substantiate their teams and justify their role, despite these projects lacking a substantive objective. It became evident to me that many of the initiatives, including those I was involved in, were superfluous. They lacked continuity and clarity in how they were expected to contribute to concrete decisions.
Additionally, there appears to be an overextension in team size, which I attribute to the retention of existing infrastructural and framework conditions that the Leadership Team (LT) chose not to update or optimize. This stance not only hampers efficiency but also contributes to an inflated workforce, potentially detracting from the organization's agility and focus.

Walk the talk. Use data you have in house to make decisions. During my tenure, I observed numerous analyses being conducted without clear justification, despite prior power calculations indicating the unlikelihood of deriving meaningful outcomes. Such endeavors, not only resource-intensive, failed to pave the way for actionable decisions or significant insights.
Given its possession of one of the most extensive genetics databases, 23andMe is uniquely positioned to set precedents in genetic research and methodological innovation. The question arises, why has this potential not been fully realized?
Regarding the products and genetic risk score reports, one must ponder whether the executive team is fully cognizant of their predictive limitations for a majority of diseases, given their low heritability. This concern stems from personal interactions where I found myself elucidating the nuances and limited predictive capabilities of these reports to acquaintances.
It is commendable that 23andMe has expanded its offerings to include blood tests. This augmentation, in conjunction with the existing genetic and survey data, holds promise for enhancing customer value.
Anyway, love the team and the work being done but pains me to see what seems a lack of focus and what appears to me the lack of data driven decisions.

Smart people who listen and act
|
|
There are some deeply experienced and inspiring people working in Engineering. I have been impressed particularly with the degree to which some managers have the ability to effect structural team changes according to the companies changing goals.
While you're expected to work hard, they know that a rested developer is a good developer. The do not push you past your limit.
|
It's a bit of a rough time with recent downsizing, and new execs coming in. They're finding their footing in clinical healthcare, and the changes in focus can be hard to deal with.

I never got to work there, so there are no pros

They rescinded my internship offer in April (for summer 2023) in a very inconsiderate manner after I first received the offer in December. Stay away from this company
