Great support from senior engineers, everyone is generally really nice. You're given time to learn the fundamentals to do your job well.

High pressure when you're an apprentice, with long hours. Office politics are at play, especially the cult-like atmosphere which doesn't really allow new ideas.

A lot of mixed feelings

8th Light was a great place to learn and grow as a new engineer. I still recommend it whole-heartedly to junior engineers as a supportive environment to develop their skills and level up. During my time there, I had many amazing coworkers who created a welcoming environment and encouraged me to grow. I appreciated being in an environment that is supportive of conference travel and professional development, and especially thankful that 8th Light puts a lot of effort into planning company events that aren’t centered around drinking.
|
Unfortunately, 8th Light’s leadership team made a lot of pretty big mistakes during my time there that negatively impacted retention and morale. These mistakes included some poor hiring decisions, failure to hire and promote women into technical leadership positions, and a few poorly-led consulting projects that led to tense client relationships. These mistakes, in addition to strict billable hour requirements, mediocre pay, and a lack of designated sick time were some of the reasons I ultimately decided to move on.

Same issues that plague most of the tech industry - leadership is virtually all white men. Women are often underpaid and overlooked for opportunities to advance. POC are not well represented.

You will learn how to work with clients and fellow coworkers on challenging projects and consistently deliver results. You will get insights into this industry that will serve you well in the future. You will learn about software estimating and agile processes that work.

You are a consultant which can be tiring (although you can go home on time). The company has a great apprentice program however it difficult costs money. In short, they can't always offer the top salary you could get. However, if that tradeoff is okay with you, you get a wide number of other benefits that might make working for 8th Light great.

- Apprenticeship program takes chances on self-starters who don't have tons of lines on the resume from big-name companies
- No insane travel requirements - it's not a ThoughtWorks-style consultancy. Sometimes there's travel but crafters get to be involved in the conversation and decision-making.

- Some projects can get kind of stressful when the client has unreasonable expectations
- Sometimes communication from management around decisions hasn't been the best, but that has been changing a lot recently with internal blogs and town halls.
