99designs is everything a startup (if it can still be called that after 10+ years) should be! A passionate workforce who by and large truly believes in the company's mission, wonderful people who work hard and have a lot of fun, and a real sense of ownership and accountability among every employee. Salary was good, benefits were excellent, and coffee was absolutely outstanding!

Not every employee in SF (where I worked) gets to visit headquarters in Melbourne, Australia. Sigh!

99designs is one of those rare places that combine what you always wanted to work with. In my case, in the intersection between creativity, design, innovation, and technology.
At the same time, 99designs really lives and breathes one of its core values 'Put People First'. This value materializes when the company incentivizes every employee to keep learning new things and collecting the skillsets they need to thrive on their career, regardless if that career will be in 99designs or not. On tougher situations when the world was facing a natural disaster or when an employee would find out they (or a loved one) was sick, 99designs shows such true and wholeheartedly compassion that you instantly understand the mantra of putting people first.
I'm leaving after 6 years on their ranks and will take learnings for life.

The team is spread out into 3 big offices: Oakland, Melbourne, Berlin. Although that gives you plenty of opportunities to travel and work from those amazing cities, it makes communication hard.

99designs is a wonderful place for someone looking to get a career started. The company consists of some of the most humorous, creative, and humble people. The managers care about their team and advocate for their reports. Standard tech office perks like Keg, happy hour, and casual work environment.
|
Benefits were not that great but I hope have improved somewhat. Large wage gap between Execs and the rest of the company. High turnover with upper management. Can feel like a boys club. I also witnessed some shady business practices including knowingly withholding payment from designers and unchecked copyright infringement.
