Your experience depends on investment vertical. Overall the culture is good and leaders genuinely want to improve it. A few jerks on every team whose true colors show around peers, while they will act as angels and team players in the presence of investors.
Career advancement is minimal, which aligns with the expected structure. The operational team consists mainly of either ambitious early-career professionals or seasoned individuals seeking a more relaxed phase in their careers.

The cash compensation is satisfactory, but junior and mid-level non-investment staff don't share in the gains from the firm's investments. While they offer pooled carry, its value is meaningless if you plan to stay for less than 5 years. 3 years to become eligible, and additional time to reach returns requirement for cash to materialize. It's disappointing that leadership and HR aren't transparent about this aspect.

It's a16z - you join for the name and title
|
- Difficult/impossible to move up (or even around for that matter) - "Managers" grow by increasing the headcount under them, leading many to be in leadership positions that shouldn't be - General communication/data sharing/cross collaboration is minimal and discouraged. Teams are very siloed and it's not uncommon to have 3 separate teams building the same tool. Even when teams are talking, people are purposefully cryptic. - Leadership is rarely around, leaving middle managers to fill in - General level of distrust between teams - If you're not on the front office, there's lots of backstabbing, favoritism and 'how long you've been with the firm' -ism. If you've been there 5+ years you're untouchable, less than 2 years and not C level, good luck. - Things move slow and extremely corporate, this is not a place where things get done quick

So much attention has gone into the hiring process. As a remote employee I feel fully supported by leadership, my peers, IT and the firm. The culture is promoted, and explained in true Ben Horowitz fashion, which everyone can understand. They recognize people join from all industries and immerse you in the basics so you have a good foundation. It is easy to feel proud when you've earned your seat at a16z, and it shows through the attitude of the teams through the daily ups and downs. In person time is cherished and staff looks forward to team building and networking events. First in class in everything we do. I'd be remiss if I didn't say that it is impossible to understand what it's like from the outside until you've experienced it yourself. Best company I've ever worked for.
