Mobile phlebotomist travel to different nursing facilities starting at 5am in the morning, Draw blood from elderly patients ,retrieve specimens ,paperwork , excellent team work, nothing hard about this job, I enjoy being a phlebotomist.

Work experience was difficult at first
|
It was not what I expected, it was at first complicated learning to draw blood on the elderly, you really need to know what to do practice makes good not perfect. But it is something I will always remember. Trainer was great very professional I learned a lot from her.

not a bad place to work helpful employees early hours nursing home residents were most pleasant supervisor wouldnot give the supplies needed to draw the specimens, ex: butterflies for hard draws.
never had time off even when asked for vacation day would still be called in to work reguardless of being out of town with a day given off.

How my day start.
|
My day starts very early in the morning around 3 am,I report to the facility that I am assigned to me. I then prepare my supplies include needles, gauze, vacutainer test tubes of all different colors, Band-Aids, tourniquets, holders, syringes and special venipuncture equipment and bio-hazard container in my caddy out of my car. Next, I visit the nurses station area where test requests that have been ordered by the nurses/physicians the day before are processed and
printed and placed in a lab book. I receive the test request slips that have all the information about the patient including their name,
unique hospital ID, date of birth, and any pertinent information that I may need to be aware of prior to the venipuncture procedure. For example, the patients may have allergies, a special medical condition or a compromised health status. Also, the test requisitions include the tests that the physician has ordered and any special request from the doctor. These special requests include drawing times, patient status (i.e. fasting) or a specific area to the blood from the patient. In some cases, the cap color or type of blood tube to be used may be listed next to the test ordered on the requisition form. After I have gathered all of the requisition slips and my phlebotomy tray, I am ready to go out to the hospital floors to draw blood. Each patients room I verify but asking the patient to state first and last name and date of birth. If the patient is unable to verify his/her name I immediately look at the patient name band and get a nurse to verify the patient identity. Once I have clear ok that it is the patient i began procedure.After the blood is collected, i label the tube or place a label (if applicable) its then carefully placed in a biohazard bag, then i signed date and time. After I have finished the whole facility, and receive all the specimens that are placed in the specimen fridge then i began to bag up, making sure that all specimens are tightly sealed and ready to go a out side lab. This a job where you are on your own I enjoy the interaction with the patients most of all.It iis very challenging in that everyone is different and everyone has a different medical problem. Some of those problems make drawing blood difficult. You have to have the skill (which comes from practice and tenacity that i already have.
