Possible expansion in the future. Great organizational culture dedicated to providing caring educational and life services toward special needs students. Special Education Cooperative Paraprofessional United States USA Paraprofessional -Very generous # sick days, was able to rollover unused sick days -Friendly co-workers -Provided professional development to all staff members -Community outings (depending on what teacher you work with) -Lots of time Off (Summer/Spring/Winter Breaks, major holidays) -Opportunity to work the Extended School Year program -There were times when we did the teachers job (took over responsibilities for various reasons). If Teacher was absent and a substitute came in, you as the paraprofessional basically run the entire day. If the teacher was conducting assessments and when done she would not take over class, instead she would let the paraprofessional continue instruction. The paraprofessionals make significantly less $ than a teacher, as they should since they are licensed but do not expect the paraprofessionals to run the classroom when teacher in not present and when they are present. -Paraprofessionals spend more hours of the day directly with the students yet never have any input on IEP meetings. We never even get asked if there is anything we had to say for the teacher to convey to the parents. -Being a paraprofessional is not a "stepping stone" for teachers before they become teachers so they really cannot relate to how hard we work. -When classroom changes need to be made for an upcoming school year, we are not consulted with. We just receive a letter in the mail letting you know your new assignment. -Not given proper tools/training to deal with maladaptive behaviors, all we could do is follow what the teacher said to do but even that would not work. -When evaluations occurred there were times when the teacher would say that she could not give me a better score since she didn't receive a perfect score. As the years went by I realized how under-appreciated and overworked we are as paraprofessionals. If you have hard working paraprofessionals let then know that their hard work is appreciated (no, this is not said by receiving a pay check). Special Education Cooperative United States USA slave wages The children warm your heart in ways you'd never imagine and some of the staff there are very nice. The leader ship here lacks.
