Respectable client list – amazing given the lack of resources and poor management, Small team - great if you like a family company with all the attendant politics and problems.
|
The company is essentially a small family team (husband and wife) and is more a 'cottage industry' than a professional outfit, due mostly to the lack of resources, and the MD's inability to service clients. This is reflected in the way the company churns through clients and burns through staff. The MD takes the role of account service, creative director, copywriter and new business manager. And none are carried out to a professional standard, it is the account service that falls behind the most. He is never available (quite possibly avoiding phone calls), and only the threat of losing an account will spur him to action. The wife takes on the roles of creative director, account service, designer, and developer and is much better at servicing all these roles for a small segment of the client list, though she is more a designer than a creative.
Freelancers be warned – freelancing at this company is a bad idea, you will be brought on to do one role, say copywriting, but then be expected to extend beyond it to areas which may not be in your skill set. You will get no support or briefing, and be expected to understand the clients business and needs instantly via telepathy. Then when you can't deliver, or heaven forbid need to ask a question for clarification, the MD will think you are incompetent, you will possibly be yelled at, or simply dismissed.
Renumeration is not bad, but don't expect your superannuation to be paid – you will have to fight for it. Reporting them to the ATO may be your only option.
