Algolia's journey started with promising technical advantages that set them apart in the market. However, over the years, what once distinguished us has become commonplace among competitors, leaving us struggling to keep up.
Most concerning is the dominance of Engineering over Product which ultimately does not allow customer-centric innovation. This approach hampers our ability to focus on customer needs and deliver solutions with urgency.
Some thoughts...
* Algolia risks fading into irrelevance amidst our more agile and customer-focused competitors. Our slow and underwhelming product launches have lost us our unique advantage that once placed us above the competition.
* Algolia's product team finds themselves outmaneuvered by competitors due to our ineffective leadership).
* The absence of clear vision has allowed competitors time to develop an extensive feature set, while Algolia continually struggles internally to define its position and differentiate within the market.
* This lack of leadership has resulted in missed opportunities , loss of customer trust, and a decrease in team morale.
* Algolia's Marketing and Sales teams lack clarity on how the product fits into the landscape of more advanced and compelling solutions, which hinders their ability to craft a compelling narrative.
* Algolia does not have a winning combination of delivery speed, solution, and GTM strategy (see above in regard to lack of identity).
* In a world of people finding easier ways to solve problems, Algolia finds a way to make customers work harder.
* If you join Algolia, you will witness many underwhelming product launches that do not solve customer needs.
* The product team continually exhibits an inclination to measure the wrong thing and ignore 95% of qualitative evidence. When the data and anecdotes continually disagree, the anecdotes are usually right.
* Watch out for R&D Ops, their gossip flame the fires of resentment. However, this is likely a symptom of the fish rotting from the head down.
* Many product managers refuse to listen or speak with customers (directly or via proxy) before launch because they're afraid their pet project will be invalidated.

Not much training so onus is on you to learn a quite technical product sold to developers yourself. Product can be quite abstract if you don’t know E-Commerce vertical.

We need to thoroughly examine the contributions and decision-making capabilities of the Chief Product Officer (CPO), Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and other leaders in the Product & Engineering departments. Frankly, I must express my profound disappointment with the rapid erosion of our technological edge under their leadership. It's disheartening to witness such a swift and careless squandering of the advantages we once held.
What's particularly concerning is the glaring absence of alignment among team members, a marked lack of accountability for outcomes, and a failure in talent management practices. Decision-making appears wasteful at best, with seemingly little consideration for the long-term implications. Moreover, there's a palpable lack of focus on the core product, with efforts seeming to scatter in multiple directions without a coherent strategy.
We need decisive action to address these issues and restore confidence in the leadership of the Product & Engineering teams.
