Great Place to Contribute and Be Valued For It
|
|
Beware of the terrible reviews. There were a couple former employees who left on bitter terms that have treated this as a dumping ground. It’s not a perfect company, but their claims are wildly dramatic and untrue. All Star hasn’t ignored this, and has welcomed feedback in annual surveys, and in an employee feedback app called TinyPulse.
The culture is friendly and tight-knit. I made strong friendships, which is common in the open floor plan. Quarterly events and volunteer opportunities abound.
Communication and collaboration are strong. From the Sales perspective, account managers have the opportunity to regularly travel for client business reviews with All Star’s leadership. Side projects with other departments are plentiful, and the opportunity to interface across departments is strong.
Processes are getting more efficient so more can get done. All Star’s had a tendency of trying to bite off more than they can chew in goal-setting, but the investment in Scrum and agile processes have helped All Star with small wins to keep the progress bar moving. Shout-out to our Product team that’s now solving more than ever before!
Great benefits, PTO, WFH. There’s lots of flexibility in making sure everyone has what they need w/ work/life balance. Snacks, coffee, free costco membership, dog friendly, etc.
|
The industry is a pain. I’d recommend doing your research here. All Star has advertising solutions for a lot of great schools that do good for consumers, but there are a lot of schools that screw over students, which can be discouraging to read about in the news. All Star’s intentions in the industry are certainly in the right place with the introduction of Attain (find it in Apple’s App Store).
As a performance marketing company, there is of course some volatility at times, which has made
it challenging to stay on track w/ projects and goals. Decision making competencies could be stronger.
The culture is very meeting heavy, but less so the last six months.

All Star gives you a lot of freedom to be assertive and get what you want out of the position you're in. They do a great job of giving you the tools and training necessary to adapt to the new role when you arrive, and are invested in their employees. Being a relatively small, employee owned company allows you to voice your opinion and feel as though you have an impact on many of the day to day situations.
Flexible work schedule, good compensation and competitive benefits are all good reasons to work here. As long as you get your work done on time and are consistent you won't have any issues. Management does a good job of making sure they're in constant contact with you to manage work load and congratulate you on individual and team wins.
Besides the good work environment and free food/coffee/pizza, there are genuinely great people who work at All Star Directories. From day one they do a great job of making you feel comfortable and are down to catch a happy hour or concert. They put an emphasis on hiring people who are going to be good for the culture and I think they did a good job of that while I was there.
I had a great time working at ASD and met some people that I'll be in contact with for a long time. Be weary of the negative experiences others had in the past, many of those are written by bitter people who probably wonder why they keep leaving companies with bad experiences (must be bad luck, right). There have been many changes at All Star over the past years and I believe that this company is headed in the right direction and has a very bright future.
|
Not too many cons if you play your cards right. Depending on what you're looking for I believe you can get what you want out of this company. They're a willing participant in your career development and allow opportunities for growth.

A Lot of Opportunity

This company offers a lot of opportunity for anyone who is willing to do the work. They promote from within and offer support to employees who address key business issues. It's a small company with easy access to leadership and the ability to chart your own career path.

It's a small company so you have to get your hands dirty.

Currently a great place to be
|
|
Not sure why these negative reviews are still popping up. Whatever happened in the past has been changed. I really enjoy working at All Star. The annual company survey had very positive responses. The atmosphere is positive. My co-workers are extremely nice and collaborative. It’s an all around good place to work.
|
Nothing is perfect, of course. There are hiccups in communication at times. HR has been nonexistent in the past. That will hopefully change with the new manager here.

stop taking money from the poor
|
|
- clean, bright bathrooms
- nice doorman in the lobby
- no travel and expense policy
- great office location and able to leave as often as possible
|
not sure where to begin;
- untrustworthy management
- unrealistic expectations
- no career advancement opportunities
- company is operating in a dying industry
- unable to grow and transition as needed in a rapidly moving market
- CEO is out of touch with reality
- culture and values are mandated from the top down
- management communicates false company survey results (100% of employees DID NOT complete)

Not for the performers, a great place for the weak who can't get job in other companies.
|
|
Super relaxed life.
You can do nothing and get away with it.
Most people use this place to get a paycheck and have tons of other businesses, activities, and hobbies outside.
|
Execution is non existent. A lot of big talk from Senior Management. Strategies, next year, big goals, blah blah. But when it comes down to actually "doing", its the same excuse - blame game again when things can't be done. Don't expect any bonuses in this place as most years this company is unable to hit its goals. Not to mention, don't fall into the equity trap this company will offer you. Remember this company is private and independent. There is no reason for them to exit soon, so your equity or options are worthless. They have no investors, so there is no pressure to exit.
If you decide to take an offer, please ask for a very high base salary. That'll cover you and give them the reasons I've outlined here above.
Senior management there are squatters. Been there for 5+ years and are enjoying their lives. A great 10 to 5 life after which, silence till the next day. Expect no independence here. Just expect a good old "I'll tell you what to do and you do it". Don't waver from that or you'll be the "bad guy or gal".
Values are on the wall and they are non existent on a day to day basis.
The biggest joke is HR. HR tells everyone that they should go on Glassdoor and fix the reviews and should write something positive about the company.
Most people who left didn't leave because they failed, they left because they are worth a lot more somewhere else. Their calibre is better suited at top companies in the Seattle are as compared to "All Star Directories".

More advice of the same

Good people. Very motivated. They want to learn and succeed! I absolutely loved the people that I worked with; amazing HR and marketing teams!
|
Except for very few (marketing and Mike in HR), not super smart or savvy. The controller is a suck-up train wreck. Too many weird political games for such a small company.
