Great cause, some issues in management
|
Like one might expect, many of the executive leadership team are physicians in their first executive positions. This leads to some challenges like competing priorities and lack of management skills.

If you don't like promotion this is where you go
|
AAFP is a great company if you are looking for benefits and work life balance. However if you ever want to be promoted, it's very unlikely to happen. People work here often have very long tenure. You'd either have to wait for someone quit or retired before you could have the opportunity. The executive leadership team is retiring too. So no one knows what the future might look like.

Employee for 10+ years
|
In my career at the AAFP, I've held 4 different work titles within two very different divisions. The workplace culture is what "sells" the Academy to new recruits, however, the work/life balance, keep it fun, confront conflict directly mentality does not apply in all situations. Being assertive and direct makes you a perceived bully, work/life balance is strictly decided upon by your direct manager but I'll admit there are many planned activities that keep it fun. The actual benefits are great, 401k match, in-house state-of-the-art workout facility, healthcare/dental/eye insurance, and vacation.

Some "selling points" do not apply to all.

Good place to work with a strong mission
|
AAFP is dedicated to making life easier for family physicians and does this through a number of programs, including CME, journals, practice advancement assistance, and advocacy.
The company itself works to make the job fun with regular employee recognition, flexible work hours, remote working opportunities, and onsite gym and wellness classes.

Severe leadership issues - cultural nightmare
|
I worked there almost 3 years. The top few levels of management are led by generally nice people. Unfortunately, they are family physicians with little real-world management experience, who are too “nice” (passive) to correct leadership problems running rampant through the organization.
The layers of management below the physicians illustrate the Peter Principle more clearly than I’ve seen it in 30+ years as a professional. This group of managers is largely a backstabbing, ineffective group that dislikes one another and builds junior high-like cliques to prop themselves up. As a result of top leadership’s ineffectiveness, the only group that can be consulted in situations where there are egregious issues (I saw/experienced several) is HR — and they are either unwilling or unable to do anything.
On the surface, this organization appears to have it all, but the only thing they do well is offer decent pay and benefits (for a nonprofit). I imagine that will change soon, as their CME model — a key revenue generator — will not hold up long with the changing CME rules. Everything else is a cultural nightmare wrapped in shiny paper.
I wish I were kidding. I’m not. Steer clear.

Great place to work
|
This is a great place to work. It promotes a family atmosphere and follows its mission very well. The benefits are very good.
The Academy is flirting with a for-profit mindset and that creates a bit of confusion, but overall, this is the best place I've ever worked.

A great environment

The Academy makes a decidedly conscious effort to let employees know that they are valued and respected with events and activities throughout the year.

Toxic Work Environment
|
Executive Leadership, Management and HR are the absolute worst I have ever seen in my entire career. Archaic in the way the work environment problems are handled. Employee surveys are terrible, but nothing is ever done year after year to fix things. Continuing Medical Education Department is awful, Marketing is terrible, IT has no idea what they are doing, Strategic Partnerships have no partnerships, Accounting probably still use paper logs. The VP's and upper management are completely out of touch with what goes on with their directors who treat employees with lack of respect. Levels of employee burnout are very high with many either seeking out EAP (which hilariously is funded by the company-yet many reports of the EAP company recommending to employees who come to them to leave their jobs asap), seek out medications to help them deal with their jobs, or turn to alcohol to deal with their job stress. If you speak up, you are fired. So if you want to work here long term, everyone advises you keep your head down, take the constant degradation from physician members who work for the academy and treat them like kings, and accept that you are replaceable no matter what value you have added financially or otherwise to the organization. HR practices are from the dinosaur age with NOTHING ever being confidential. And if you go to them with any concerns, they immediately notify the person you have concerns with and tell them everything you said! Which only results in retaliatory treatment. People are crying at work weekly. Very little time to take the vacation you actually earn and if you don't use it, you lose it yearly. They lure you in by saying they have 37.5 hour work weeks, but there is NO WAY you can complete all the work given to you unless you work much, much more than that. Stay clear. Most of the reviews seen here are from physician members-NOT employees who actually work here and endure the constant mental torment.

Excellent workplace
|
Organization was very work-life balance oriented. The biggest frustration was the variations in how organizational policies and procedures were applied across divisions.
