Caring Leadership, Smart Staff
The association has a new leader, who demonstrates considerable caring about her staff. The mission is easy to believe in and the members themselves are a pleasure. The benefits are very good, the pay is competitive, the downtown office is nice, and most colleagues are hard-working, smart, talented and friendly. In recent months, with the stress brought on by the pandemic and associated complications, leadership has been very understanding that we are facing new challenges together. There's a lot to like about working at ADEA.
There are growing pains anytime there's a change in leadership, but the desire to do the right thing and support staff is evident and welcome. Probably the biggest challenge right now is the fact that remote work for all (with COVID-19) has complicated communication and coordination among staff. It's taking more work to share information effectively so that everyone can be in sync.

The demonstrated interest in staff well-being is appreciated. Keep it up. There's a lot going on, with competing priorities at times. Bringing sharper focus to priorities and more clarity around decisions could help us keep moving forward. Overall, ADEA is on the right track with good people and worthy goals.

It's ok
Good benefits, including a fitness reimbursement and fully paid dental. Financially stable. Not super stressful, pretty 9 to 5 for most people (depends on your role).
Boring. No cost of living salary increases. Culture depends on your team.

My coworkers were very friendly and helpful, and the management was also responsive and understanding.

No cons to speak of, my experience was overwhelmingly positive.

Great organization hindered by management who have lost the plot
- Friendly, professional co-workers
- Beautiful office space in Mt. Vernon Sq. that's easily accessible via transit
- Generous benefits package and competitive compensation for the sector
- Precision and care for academic dentistry at the heart of all of ADEA's work
- Plenty of networking and travel opportunities for the association's regular conferences
- Fantastic HR department who invest in employee development
- High turnover: upper management is hawkish about whether employees "buy-into" the corporate culture of the organization. Those that don't conform to the held views of the CEO and upper management are ostracized and excluded from decision-making processes, and eventually pushed out altogether. Long-term employees keep their heads down and don't "rock the boat" at risk of losing their jobs. As a result, there's a high annual attrition rate, and exceedingly low morale throughout all divisions.
- Excessive micromanagement: upper management micromanages almost all decisions, which stifles innovation.
- No strategic vision: ADEA has no vision for the future. In a period of transition, that's to be expected, but there's no guidance on where the organization is going, what the priorities are or how the organization will tackle the growing challenges within academic dentistry.

Good place
Good, competitive benefits, esp. Prof. Development
Healthy organization with a lot in reserves
Leadership is comprised of academics, i.e. deans, associate deans, so the culture is a reflection of that sort of scholarly university culture, which I count as a pro because it encourages critical thinking from all staff.
Very respectful of everyone there.
Values diversity.
Risk averse culture ( stifles innovation).
Can feel bureaucratic at times, hard to just chat with leadership folks, and this makes it feel a lot more corporate, which I think is atypical for a medium size, 70 person, not for profit association.
Don't expect regular, frequent casual days.

Could Do Better
35-hour work week was nice. Good location close to Mt. Vernon metro. Occasional catered meals, Christmas party, etc. Really nice 10% salary match for retirement after the first year.
Few opportunities for internal advancement. Low-level staff are not valued for their service or expertise. Little effort to invest in the professional development of staff. CEO would occasionally say insensitive or nonsensical things in staff meetings. Little receptivity to staff feedback.
