Not a collegial environment. People only focused on their narrow area of interest.
too much back stabbing and complaining throughout organization. Management does not protect managers. Poor pay raises even if you have good reviews. Not an efficiently run organization. Lot of managers stuck in their ways, not open to new ideas and programs. Jealousy if you have resources for your department. Hyper critical environment.
Great mission.
Unfocused and unsupportive environment in general. Many good people, but a lot of burnouts. Financial problems were never ending during my time there.

Very comprehensive, all inclusive, limitless learning experiences
I work only as a volunteer but there are so many forums to learn from and other volunteers in different fields to collaborate with. The American Library Association has over 65 thousand members, and the impacts we make with various projects are far-reaching... affecting schools, libraries, laws and politics for the better. We fight against discrimination, favoritism, and push for equal access to information for everyone.
I log onto their website, participate in several forums, and team up with other people on projects. For example, I currently am working on library access for displaced individuals and families, not just locally but nationally as well. I'm on a national team composed of four members, working with the American Library Association to establish new libraries in every state. The work is daily, and I simply love learning new things and meeting new people interested in the same causes.
The hardest part of this volunteer job is recruiting more members onto our team because nowadays most people scoff at the importance of libraries when, in reality, it's the only source of free education for anyone from cradle to grave and libraries are the anchors of civilization.

American Library Assoc. is an overall productive and relaxed environment to work in. They keep me busy with plenty of work.
A relaxed and fun environment with plenty of work to do. I have other tasks as well and the place keeps me busy. I received the position through Stivers Staffing Agency. I'm on call, and I work their consistently on a long term temporary basis. I perform the work long enough to obtain experience until a full time permanent position comes along through another interview. The staff at Stivers and American Library have been very supportive and helpful to me.

Mission-driven organization focued on enhancing community through libraries and literary. It was an honor to work for the ALA
As an ALA employee, I felt that I was respected and heard. It is energizing to be a part of an organization with a mission to improve community through literacy and libraries, embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion. The workload was heavy, often requiring working 50 hours of work or more per week -- but the positive impact on society was worth it.

Great mission
Love the mission of the organization but leadership is lacking. Members are fantastic and there is significant work-life balance. People never retire and upward mobility is limited.
Flexible scheduling and remote opportunities for some staff
Poor leadership

Values driven
Mission driven; great place to work if you value literacy, public service. Sometimes a bit too subject to trendiness, but still an organization that stands behind its values.

I only freelanced here, but can't see a way to skip this step
I was just a freelance production artist covering a maternity leave, but I liked it. A little quiet for my taste, but the people in the department were friendly.

Collaborative work environment
Everyone is passionate about the association and works collaboratively for its members and the profession. The technology and building is a little old, but not the worst. People seem to actually care about each other here and are personable.

Laid back atmosphere but still productive

I work as an intern and I am given plenty of independence and responsibility but my supervisors are always available if I have any questions or need any help.

Accepting place with laid back attitude
I only worked there on a contract basis. It was friendly and small. The pay was not very good. I sat at a desk in front of a computer all day.
