His ego is legendary, he screams at staff (literally), and ignores any ideas or evidence that suggests his ideas won’t work. None of the growth he’s promised for years has come true and he is fundamentally opposed to diversity initiatives. AMA\u2019s emphasis on strong salaries, flexible work arrangements, expanded holidays, increased PTO, and other positive culture changes are due in large part to Russ\u2019 influence. And Russ has always treated me with respect and listened to me with an open mind. I have disagreed with Russ, debated with him, and even changed his mind on some points. He has always remained supportive of me and my work at the AMA. \n\nTo characterize Russ as fundamentally opposed to diversity initiatives is false. I\u2019ve observed Russ work to increase diversity at the AMA across many dimensions, including focusing on volunteer leader diversity early in his tenure. Amazing opportunity to get to know the marketing community and meet many people. Good resume builder and some new ideas are being integrated. Lots of "walking on eggshells around here." CEO is very self-absorbed and other department heads don't look like they can ever stand up to him. Huge amount of turnover. Lots of procedure and process; "meetings about meetings" and "committees about committees." Lots of talk about "values" which is just that - talk. As a department head at the AMA, I must say I disagree with your perspective that department heads don\u2019t feel they can stand up to the CEO. Russ is passionate about his vision for the organization, for sure, which is ultimately a good thing. I can understand how some may perceive this as strong-willed, but he remains open-minded to many points of view. We regularly have healthy debates in the executive and leadership team meetings. \n\nI also feel compelled to point out that we don\u2019t have huge amounts of turnover. By focusing on infrastructure improvements, the AMA is constantly looking into the future in how to best service their members and therefore keeping us relevant to our core audience. Including members from all teams in interview panels, design sprints and user testing not only introduces AMA employees to aspects of the business they might not have exposure to but also makes all successes more broad than "this team won". Outdated and increasingly irrelevant model & institution. Huge disconnect between execs and remaining staff. People are often fired. Good opportunity for entry level people to gain basic experience. Casual dress code. Very outdated ways of doing things, inexperienced leadership in many areas who don't communicate well. Pattern of hiring people then letting them go when they realize they didn't know what they needed. No innovation or creativity.
