Struggle to think of any!
There are some negative commenters out there and whilst entitled to their opinion and free speech, it's a shame some of them didn't make use of the feedback channels available to them whilst employed to raise their views instead of anonymously offering a critique on a public platform.
Their issues certainly don’t reflect the current reality, mine nor the wider teams.

Pursuing too many initiatives and developing a questionable culture

- Great aspiration/vision on paper and can attract talent as a result
- Some pockets of strong talent still remain
- International opportunities
- A great life style business if you are not looking to challenge the company status quo. Lots of flexibility
|
- This organisation is top heavy and is led by poor managers (in the main). Power and rewards are held by this group of people. They do ask for input from the broader team but at a surface level and do not sincerely consider it
- Limited meritocracy and a blame culture leading to over 15 people leaving in a 12 month period (possible to confirm this on LinkedIn). Many of these left on their own accord but a number were exited in a very clumsy fashion
- Team outside of core investing activity is too large. Not a lean structure for the amount of capital managed
- Fickle when it comes to new initiatives (start an institute/fellowship then put it on pause. Start a fund raise then change the vehicle focus or add another. Start a consulting arm then remove it)

Curious and good investors though subtle key man exposure. They manage to attract and hire genuinely good people.

Albeit a strong ability to hire top talent, there is poor leadership which drives poor morale, a simplistic vision and sense of purpose which is 2nd tier. They are simply a VC, yet think otherwise.

Last year was a pivotal year for the company. Some of the (necessary) growing pains meant that a few (negative) people had to go -- and there's sour grapes out there. The company is much stronger for that tough transitional period.

Deluded: My Misadventure in the Anthemis Bubble

My direct boss was amazing and so were some of the team (all have now left). The office in Soho was perfectly located for great food and drinks with friends after work.
|
The founding partners have delusions beyond all recognition about their importance in the world and the VC bubble despite many staff raising issues. As such they either knowingly are burying their heads in the sand or worst of all are incompetent at running the company. The fact they appointed a new COO who has never worked in VC and has no financial, legal or operational experience having forced out their previous COO who had all of these skills because she did not go along with all their idiocies shows this is in bucket fulls.
They employed people to try and be this cool and diverse business, however some of them have no idea how to do their jobs and were only employed because of the cronyism lead culture there is at Anthemis. Some of the partners are clueless beyond belief and I would not trust them to look after a stone let alone millions in financial investments.
What is so so sad is that what Anthemis was set up to do was exciting and bold, and that is why lots of us joined the company as it was going places and ahead of its time. What the founders have managed to do is clutch defeat from an almost dead certain jaws of victory.

Anthemis operates in an interesting space and attracts a high calibre of people. The working culture has a good work/life balance and people are generally fun to hang out with.
|
Every day feels more and more like this is a failing business. About 25 people have left in the last two years or so out of a company that employed about 45. New people are constantly hired but all the good people leave when they have had enough of the toxic and incompetent leadership that is always lying.
The Founders are out of touch or not interested in reality, are egotistical to the extreme and have created a loyalty culture killing any semblance of a meritocracy. As a consequence Anthemis has more cronies than the White House.
There appears to be a growing reputation issue, every time I say to people I work at Anthemis they are either laughing or asking me if I am also looking for a job. The former CEO was fired for sexual harassment, that was the tip of the iceberg and in no way addressed the cultural, organisational and strategic car crash that is Anthemis. It’s getting to the point that investors are not comfortable and this is making raising a new fund difficult and we can only attract unsophisticated investors.
