The workers were extremely nice and helpful. The discounts sucked (20% off, discounted company lunch which was kind of expensive still). Great people, nice visitors, but most people work as volunteers; only a third of the staff are paid and I think that's mainly the managers and the cleaning people. Good place to volunteer if you are studying STEM/life sciences or want to go into the medical field. Shifts are pretty long though. Many of the same people I worked with in 2002-2009 are still there in 2020. That tells you something. The work is rewarding, the people are very nice and there is a collaborative environment. Must be comfortable with public speaking, animal handling, and informing guests about different animals seen at the aquarium. The more I surrounded myself with the marine ecosystems and marine biologists I have met the more knowledgeable I have became. I am scuba certified with more than 20 dives under my belt, and freediving is a passion of mine, both of which I do for joy and photography. Freediving is a calming space for me underwater as is scuba diving. Often times I was joined by a mammologist or a scuba diver who was located inside the exhibit at the time of the presentation. I would also lead guest on behind the scene tours of the aquarium explaining how the filtration system works, the history of the aquarium and how we care for the animals.
