Seriously consider if Armature is the right fit for you

|
- Small tight-knit company filled with very friendly people
- Lots of face time and an open door policy with c-suite and decision makers
- Competitive salary
- Stocked kitchen
- Sells a large, feature-rich software platform as a service
- Lots of opportunities to innovate or address technical debt (if you're willing to put in 60-80 hours a week)
|
- Billable hours are the primary focus and often a topic of contentious conversation
- Addressing technical debt, developing internal tooling, and other non-billable is often put aside in favor of billable work and will only get done if someone addresses it in their "free time"
- There is a pervasive attitude of "this is how we've always done it" or "we've already tried that" which allows larger process and procedure problems to only fester and never be truly resolved
- There is such a desire for "efficiency" that they've pre-maturely optimized out any meeting/ritual which would actually be valuable. The few regular meetings there were (weekly planning and grooming meetings) had zero value.
- The development team is shared amongst the PM's and each PM runs several projects. The PMs have a hard time prioritizing the work for the development team so in the end whichever PM squeals the loudest about their project will get that project's work prioritized for the sprint.
- The 2 people with the most knowledge on the project are always too busy and when they do give you information/guidance it is often incomplete or flat out wrong
- The code base is extremely convoluted and opinionated making it extremely hard to work in

Management is all over the place, they care more about the dollar amount than the quality of work, super heavy workload, no ramp up time or knowledge transfers needed to understand the complex product. Most of the knowledge of the development team resides in 2 senior people as there is an incredibly high turnover.

The team is diverse and everyone is both respectful and respected. The small company size means you can make a big impact, which is exciting. Benefits, Perks and Observations.
- Great overall work environment.
- Fun, vibrant, well-designed office space including a balcony to get some fresh air or take in the variety of birds in the area.
- Stocked kitchen with healthy snacks (bars, fruit, etc.) as well as less-than-healthy snacks (candy, chips, cookies, soda, etc.).
- Convenient location at the intersection of two major highways (28 and 267).
- Solid technical architecture. They actually put thought into the systems behind the scenes and account for future growth, etc. It's refreshing, coming from other places which just hobble things together!
- Very open to suggestions. If you speak up here, you will be heard!
- Great management team. I chat with the CEO on a daily basis. Even when the execs. are clearly busy, they always have time to help/listen/give advice.
- Salary and benefits. I was given a substantial boost to my base salary after my first month!
- Regular catered lunches, breakfast burritos, birthday cake.
- Weekly all-hands meetings get right to the point and keep everyone on the same page.
- Weekly Developer Sessions are great for developers to share their knowledge with the rest of the team.
- Right next to Dulles Airport, it's awesome to watch the huge planes fly in so low.

- 401k match is a bit low compared to what I've seen elsewhere.
(Forcing myself to list at least a couple, so the following items are extremely minor.)
- Not many food options in the area (5min drive for more options).
- The adjacent road is very busy during rush-hour; can be difficult when exiting left!
- For some people, it may be too casual.
- For some people, it may be "too small".
- Bathrooms are locked? :)

Only A players work here whether it is the services team or the product. team. Held to high standards when it comes to performance and coding skills. Open office, open door policy, fully stocked kitchen with plenty of healthy options like fruits, yogurt, breakfast bars, kind bars, nuts and the list goes on... and some unhealthy options like candy(which is the first to go) and chips.
Learning is encouraged. Management is supportive and has a transparent approach to everything. Weekly staff meetings to get everybody on the same page when it comes to goals, sales activities or other initiatives. Dev sessions are held once a week to introduce new technologies or share dev tricks.
Feedback is given immediately whether it is positive or negative so you don't have to wait till the end of the year to know how you did. Opportunities are available for people who show initiative and are willing to raise the bar. Several senior staff members earned and grew into the positions.

B and C players are not going to make it in here. People who don't want to learn, are arrogant, incompetent and have no humility are quickly weeded out. People who are not used to taking constructive criticism may feel disgruntled. It is a small company so successes and failures are magnified so some people can stand out more than others.
