An amazing company for a flexible job that works in any location and does not have a completely rigid schedule. A&L has been operating as a remote office community for a very long time and has many of the tools and experience to make it work. The variety of people that have come to work at this company is very interesting. You meet people with such passion in skills related or unrelated to software engineering. There is much depth to the company’s community.
It’s very easy to work in a variety of locations or while on the move and the software engineering part of the job is relatively relaxing with minimal distractions. Of course, it’s not completely disconnected to the point of no human interaction, but there are many times where you can just sit down and focus on your task for a couple hours, pacing your day the way you want it to be paced.
A&L keeps up with the latest tools and technologies. I’ve seen other companies that use software in their everyday practice that’s trapped in time a few decades ago. A&L is a small enough company that it can upgrade the software that makes up its infrastructure to avoid being trapped in the past. It’s also large enough that it can invest in building its own internal tools. There are a plethora of tools developed specifically for our own use that make mundane tasks less time consuming.
Flexibility in schedule is a wonderful advantage. While the company does need your availability to be somewhat consistent and overlapping with others’ availability, there is no strict, rigid policy on this. If your car breaks down and you need to take it into the shop at 10am, you can pick up from work and go do that; you can even work at the car repair shop. If you like to go for bike rides right after a long meeting to relieve some stress, you can do that.
A&L has a very friendly management style. A&L entrusts each of its developers with the same level of responsibility that would warrant management positions at other companies. The people I work with know I’m capable of managing myself and I know that they are capable of managing themselves. Removing the annoying micromanagement allows project managers to focus on the more important things like client interactions, budgeting, task planning and prioritization and allows the developers to work with fewer interruptions and without feeling belittled.

As expected with a remote office, the social aspects of the company are not stellar. While fewer interruptions is great at times, other times it brings a feeling of isolation when you look up from your laptop and realize that at no point in your workday are you going to run into any coworkers from the office unless you reach out to them explicitly. That kind of impromptu meeting and connecting with people happens very rarely.
Even with great self-discipline, it is very easy to become distracted with side projects, geeky things, or just browsing the Internet. While working on less-than-exciting tasks, your passion for programming or other geeky hobbies can overcome your desire to be productive. Without the feeling of productivity of surrounding coworkers, this can quickly spiral into several hours of unproductive time. You then end up either working late into the evening to make up for it, or falling behind on hours and due dates.
Another common problem with telecommuting that A&L is not immune to is the separation of work and home. You can work from anywhere, which means that you can fix a critical bug in production from your laptop tethered to your smart phone in the middle of the woods while camping. You can join a video call and answer some emails while at a coffee shop on your day off. The flexibility to work anywhere can quickly become a negative thing if you don’t actively fight the urge to be available to work every waking minute of the day.
The lack of separation becomes very apparent when combined with working late or fall behind. You feel like you can always pick work up later tonight and make up the time. You don’t get the sense of relief that you’ve escaped work and it sits at the back of your mind during what should be a time to relax.

I know that the leaders at A&L are always working to keep the culture of the company alive and true to its roots. I’m not sure if they are aware of how much of a challenge some of the cons are for some of the developers, how big of an issue it can be for newcomers to the company, and how much it risks harming the company culture. It’s easy to get bogged down by the important business management that needs to happen and forget to keep an eye on how the company culture is doing.

Incredibly bright developers, talented designers, and outstanding management team. Lots of interesting projects. A variety of clients, including large ones, like Google and Apple, as well as small and medium businesses. The company also stands behind its developers in case of any misunderstanding with clients. More experienced developers provide mentorship to the younger ones. Flexible schedule.

Limited pay range is the largest limitation. But it's counterbalanced by relatively steady contract work and a great team. At the same time, always working remotely also has its disadvantages - seeing colleagues and team mates face-to-face at most once a year.
