Incompetent management
|
|
Artoo always tries to stick to a very lovely in house team & they follow something like friday lunch out, festival celebrations, work anniversaries, B'days, weekly group meets, one on one review sessions, farewells and much more that keeps every employee engaged to the company. As an active startup every single employee is always equipped with their area of work and peers do help each other. That provides a great learning exposure for freshers.
|
As a former employee I had faced them doing incompetent management quite a couple of times. They work truly business minded when it comes to employee management.

Challenging but Rewarding
|
|
1. Great tech stack Android + Ember JS on web + Nodejs backend
2. Flexibility to become a framework expert or go full stack
3. Challenging technical requirements - B2B configurable product, offline first, thick client. A particularly challenging set of requirements on Android, because the end customer may be in a low connectivity area with poor financial data points. Saving locally and then lazy syncing text and images combined with complex credit underwriting on the android app are some unique aspects of Artoo Android. Not commonly seen in UX focussed B2C apps
4. A small and focussed engineering team with tonnes of challenging technical work
5. Satisfaction of having made an impact in the lives of MSME owners. Speaking of end customers during field visits is a great motivational factor
6. Fast paced environment and good scope for career growth
7. Management team is open to feedback and always accessible
|
There is a flip side to every point mentioned earlier.
1. A small team means good work and visibility. It also means long hours and stress.
9-5 is ruled out. But work timings are flexible and laptop can be taken home.
It depends on the employee, how best they manage their time.
2. It takes patience
If you are looking for a fat paycheck, with a company that offers a lot of peripheral benefits, average amount of work and then moving on after 1-2 years, don't come here. Seeing the returns for hard work put in takes time. With a fintech startup in the social sector it takes even longer. You will have to be patient to build value, see it impacting clients and customers and finally see it impacting you.

Avoid the spiel and crappy work
|
|
You get to work on lots of routine tasks, and asked for a status update every hour all through the day and weekends. You really do feel **important**.
You do not get overpaid and pampered with money or facilities, you will learn to make ends meet in expensive bangalore, so its easier to quit.
You learn to live on elaborate made up stories of impact, purpose, excellence. You could learn to be the next great story writer.
|
I cannot think of too many, my mind was jaded with the constant haggling over priorities of mind numbing tasks.
Let me still go over a couple. Most discussions, action plans, thinking revolves around engineers, if you are not looking at an engineering role then beware. You are a throwaway.
If you ask for a raise after even 2 years to even a few notches below market rates, you are seen as not worthy of the great purpose Artoo works for and not aligned to its awesome values.
As a small company it is supposed to be a collaborative environment, welcoming of diverse viewpoints. But most of the important decision making is either opaque and comes top down or transparent and adamant.

Be aware and track promises that you make to your clients, employees and other stakeholders. Today you leave most people high and dry, and then you mock them when they are not around.
You will never able to really grow as a company if you keep insisting on low salaries / salary cuts as a proof of purpose alignment, keep holding all decisions to yourself and not providing ownership / delegation to employees.
Other than 2-3 favorites, most others are getting a raw deal in terms of roles, responsibilities. And they need to keep proving and prostrating themselves multiple times.

Good people. Potential to grow
|
|
1) Fast growing startup, lots of interesting challenges and hard problems to solve
2) Amazing tech team - built a really large complex project in a short span of time which would have taken years for a regular services company to build.
3) Good team, good people to learn and grow. Learning is a key aspect in everyone's minds. There is an open culture to share knowledge. People get good exposure to latest in tech and finance
4) No politics between teams. Everyone understands that they are working towards the common goal and it is not just another job.
5) There is a strong push for financial inclusion around the world that works in Artoo's favour. On the road to capture market share (ESOPs will yield good results in the years to come)
|
1) Some early promoters have become detractors because of constant bugs and issues. Need to focus on making the product stable and scalable
2) Early employees have worked on multiple things beyond their regular roles and repsonsibilities but they are not getting much exposure to management or leadership - they need mentorship and a career roadmap

An interesting place with helpful people
|
|
- You get to meet and learn from people using your product
- I get to work and learn technologies across the stack
- Friendly and helpful people around you, open office.
- Its a startup, exciting for the people who love the multitude of challenges within resource constraints.
- 25-40 is probably the ideal size for a workplace! :)
|
- Workplace can be unfocused with lots of parallel activity, open office.
- Its a startup, lack of structure can be tiring a lot of the time.
- We should ideally be 2 times bigger, current team size sometimes restricts us to firefighting rather than longer term work.

An environment to learn and experiment
|
|
If you're a self-starter, quick thinker, and passionate about the work you do, then Artoo helps you take it to the next level. Founded by diligent and extremely smart individuals, working at Artoo helps you dip your feet deep into the work you're doing and doesn't let you be a mere spectator. It's a particularly lucrative place for Engineers as they form the core of the company. As an engineer, you get to see and feel the things you create in real time, which fosters learning and ownership. Colleagues are young and charming to work with, and your coworker can be anyone from the CEO of the company or a fresh graduate, which makes it exciting.
|
It's not a typical 9-5 job, so you may find yourself working a few extra hours and sometimes even on weekends, (as is the case with any startup). The company is still evolving, so a lot of things are learnt on the go. Hence, you must be prepared to work amidst chaos and react quickly to changing situations and spur-of-the-moment decisions.

It's a good place to work sans the political set up of a corporate, and the team looks forward to help and bring each other up in their work, which is a rarity these days. The company surely has a bright future, no doubts with that. However, there needs to be more clarity in planning and more diligence in execution of processes and operations. There is a tendency to overestimate possibilities and capabilities, which yields unexpected outputs. It may even backfire at times, perhaps. Once Artoo finds a foothold, there's no looking behind. It's sure to leave a mark in the industry, sooner or later.

Artoo, where the world is your oyster
|
|
The most special part of working at Artoo, is the opportunity for employees to define and direct company strategy and culture. This is not easily accomplished, but having a flat organization with direct access to the founding team helps measurably.
The 3 founders are completely different in personality and skill set, but are equally committed to the growth of the company and its people, which is evident in how performance reviews are handled for example - a combination of anonymous peer reviews to get constructive feedback and an open/honest discussion with the founders/mentors on accomplishments and areas of improvement. The founders' passion for an inclusive India is palpable in conversations (sometimes in the style of open-forum debates), and traverses into the way in which Artoo hires for diversity (in every sense of the word).
And that diversity is critical to developing creative solutions to improve access to finance for the underbanked. This was my experience at Artoo, as we went about addressing this mission -
1) I developed an entrepreneurial spirit - At Artoo, it's encouraged and applauded to go beyond identifying problems or opportunities, to actually offer solutions and implement them (albeit in a scrappy/MVP sort of way). And doing so, provides insight into how to operate a startup - hiring the right people (recruiting is a group decision at Artoo), how to plan around resource constraints, building a new business function as the company & product scales, and celebrating even the smallest of wins (whether that's a great sales deck or a identifying the root cause of a plaguing bug in the software).
2) I developed a deeper understanding of India & Emerging Markets - The number of field visits to talk to customers and customers' customers provided a great deal of insight into the challenges of industrial/manufacturing sectors, and how their growth is critical to India's economy. Understanding the perspective of a first time technology user is fascinating - and important when developing technology for the masses.
There's a lot to be done at Artoo. Things are certainly not perfect - selling software to banks is tough, sales cycles are indeed long and unpredictable, hours are long too. But, that's where the opportunity lies for authentic people to jump in, offer solutions, iterate, and see how the company as a whole moves forward, without losing sight of its mission.
|
There's still work that's required for Artoo to transition into a product company. Given that India's digital landscape is changing at a rapid pace, Artoo recognizes that there's a lot that can be done for its product to be "complete." However, it is absolutely critical there be a product roadmap that's constantly managed and groomed, as the sales team delivers insight on market demands The gap between sales and engineering absolutely needs to be bridged with a true "product team" as the company grows.

Recognize that there are a set of people who want to be treated as just an employee. Having a founder's attitude is something a lot of employees are not prepared for - and it's okay if people aren't on board for that, so long as they're authentic & contributing appropriately.

Good people bad management
|
|
Company has been able to befool some really good people and that is the only pro one can find in there.
|
One of the really impractical environment to work.
No leaves
Seven days working
No working hours (need to work even after you reach home, 16-18 hrs a day)
Peanuts payment
No personal growth
No mechanism for salary review (People are drawing the same what they started with)
Management (both the founders) are really impractical. They are overconfident about their skills and caliber which helps them to get clients but then after employees are pushed like machines to fulfill their promises which are nowhere close to reality.
Policies are not at all employee friendly, after working throughout the year even during leaves and weekends they don't encash them instead if one has taken any extra leave they do deduct it from salary.
They try to cheat employees when it comes to final settlement and one need to be very careful about documents you are signing there and before agreeing to anything (if you are careful probably, you probably won't agree).
