However, due to mismanagement this entire organisation is going down the drain. Such a disgrace. EDIT: In order to comply with Glassdoor's community guidelines I am not able to discuss an individual or by name, title or association. ---- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- ---- There are numerous things that I considered not perfect at ASEF; Too many to enlist in this review. ASEF is far from being a perfect non-profit organisation but lately a lot of things changed to the worst. The current management has been abusing its role/power by negatively influence the entire organisation. Here are SOME examples of what the management has been doing in the past year: - The management regularly bullies employees that "it" doesn't like (often resulting in tears, frustration, anxiety and anger from the side of the employees) - The management intimidates employees that have weak personalities (half of the staff does not dare to go against the management because they are afraid) - The management collects evidence and keeps record of all of their 'enemies' in order to be able to threaten them if they start causing "trouble" - The management is not accountable to anyone and clearly abuses its position - The management has no strategy or vision. Decisions concerning staff are taken behind closed doors, without any consultation. - The management goes by the motto "Divide and Rule". That means that it aims at dividing strong group dynamics within ASEF's departments in order to consolidate its position and control over all employees. This fascist strategies of intimidation employed, result in great discomfort and unhappiness. THERE IS NOT A SINGLE ASEF EMPLOYEE THAT IS HAPPY WITH WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON IN THE PAST 5 MONTHS! Being apolitical but working with governments brings its own challenges as well as opportunities. While bureaucracy is definitely there and could (as well as should) be diminished, overall ASEF offers their employees a great level of liberty and responsibility to take ownership of the projects they run. The team is small, so each staff member has to step up in order for the organisation as a whole to continue evolving and improving (i.e. if you're just looking for any 9-5 job to put bread on the table without an actual interest in ASEF's vision and mission, this is most probably not for you). And yes, you will most probably end up working a lot. But yes, you will also be inspired and gratified by the work itself, your colleagues, your partners, your participants and other stakeholders. Only you can assess if the significant efforts you will need to put in are worth your time and dedication. If you believe it is, please give it a try. Your experience at ASEF can be very different depending on in which department you work. None is better than the other, each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. The collaboration between departments is not the strongest, but you can yourself influence this, if it's something that is important to you. Unfortunately Asian and European governments are not giving ASEF or the ASEM Process sufficient support (political, financial, human resources, etc.) which can lead to some challenges in relation to implementing projects. Expect hence having to come up with creative solutions to these and other challenges related to the characteristics of the organisation and its work. While interpersonal conflicts have existed in the past, the situation has improved the past couple of years. Such conflicts can come up again though at any time (and in any organisation/company), so it is also your responsibility to contribute (and avoid being counter-productive) to a healthy work environment, if you get such an opportunity. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 2.0 4.0 3.0 4.0 3.0 4.0 3.0 363712 Open Encourage (if not demand) and reward meaningful and impactful innovation within ASEF projects. Dare demanding more support (political, financial, human resources, etc.) from Asian and European governments. private:asia-europefoundation https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=363712 Mar 1st, 2019 12:00AM Open Open ASEF Anonymous Employee Singapore Unfriendly and health-damaging environment. - Located in Singapore, a beautiful and culturally interesting city. - Good for CV. - Good for introduction to the world of inter-governmental organisations. - Occasional bonding with other employees . - Management ignores demands of employees (e.g. regarding need for additional staff, better salary, enhanced work-life balance). - Petty office politics: employees marginalised and ostracised by other employees over petty disputes, childish plotting against one another. - Ineffective HR department: slow, ignores employees' complaints and demands. - Extra hours rarely taken into account (and thus unpaid). - Disregard for employees' mental health and well-being. - Most projects amount to the equivalent of throwing (thousands) of coins into a fountain and praying for a supreme being to grant you a wish: no reviews about the impact of projects, incredibly expensive closed-doors conferences do not seem to produce any concrete results apart from being networking opportunities for (relatively randomly selected) participants. - Refusal to evaluate, re-consider and change working methods, even when they clearly fail to produce results. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 DISAPPROVE 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1.0 363712 Open - Change your top management & hire individuals able to bring real vision and focus to the organisation. - Produce evaluation of true impact of projects (not just numbers of projects organised or participants). - Be accountable for failures and face up to responsibilities. - Value your employees. Great exposure to second tier international institutions (ADB, World Bank, Bill &Melinda Gates and and likes are out of ASEF's league sadly) and access to top civil society fora. Great early-career introduction to the world of second-track diplomacy in SEA. If you can navigate the politics, you may be able to gain valuable insights into how international organisations operate. A case-study in mismanagement, ASEF is an example of what happens when power goes unchecked. Leadership is unaccountable, ineffective, petty and entitled. Ministries who can't justify deadweight and entrenched staff, neutralise them by sending them in faraway foundations with no clout, where they can reign freely without doing damage. Ancient Romans used to call this practice "Promoveatur ut amoveatur" - (pomote to remove). This woman doesn't have a life except her work and she expects the same from her team (of one currently, after 3 people left in a row within 6 months). She doesn't see you as a team member but a machine. don't share your thoughts with the DE or DED as they are behind the CoS. ASEF used to be a fun place to work in with great team of people. Recently I have heard so many unpleasant incidents happening and it feels like hell the staff are living in hell. The sources comes not just from one person but from many people, those who are now working there are so frustrated, angry and unhappy. The management is unreasonable, colleagues have avoided each other so as not to get implicated.
