Development/fundraising strategies are a moving target, difficult lines of communication throughout the organization leading to left-hand/right-hand misunderstandings, efforts duplicated or opportunities missed. Shoestring budget even before COVID-19 closure, so positions are left unfilled and salaries unreasonably low. World-class art. Always something fascinating going on. Convenient location. People are passionate about their work and the future of the museum. It's a shame that leadership has embarked on such a poorly planned expansion project, with seemingly little consideration for the impact it would have on the financial security of the museum and the ability of its dedicated staff to do their jobs successfully. There is no job security there right now. There is a lot of thought given to how to innovate and be creative in how to present art and culture to the visitors and most of the staff is very professional and highly skilled. The physical space is beautiful, and it is very fulfilling to work in an environment surrounded by ever-changing art. The primary "con" of the museum is a lack of vision and direction to a common mission. The director is hands-off to an almost negligent extent in any aspect of teamwork and there is a considerable lack of trust both vertically and horizontally. Individual fiefdoms compete (sometimes nastily) for scarce resources and work in silos, ludicrous in an institution this small, and the product and overall progress suffer as a result. Turnover is high at every level, and those who stay eventually perpetuate the mistrust and dysfunction. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL -1.0 DISAPPROVE 4.0 2.0 4.0 2.0 2.0 2.0 1.0 263981 Open My advice to management is undertake a serious effort to break down the mistrust and silos and operate the museum at a professional level to take advantage of everyone's skills, interest and input. Make decisions quickly and stick with them, don't be afraid to fail, and present a solid vision not just for the public-facing components of the museum's future, but how it will operate inside the walls. Employees feel very disconnected from any kind of influence, despite almost continual lip service paid to gathering feedback. Failing that, the current director's primary strengths are clearly the art itself and fundraising.
