I got to work with students from around the world and made lots of friends with the host families.
|
Teenagers are the same no matter what country they come from. They need constant supervision especially when they all got together on an over night field trip. It was also hard to find good host families before they came to the US.

I really can not share anything nice. They are able to pay employees because of the misrepresentation and keeping of consumer deposits.
|
They misrepresent themselves. Keep consumers application fees. They are not nice to high school students.

Good training and leadership to follow, excellent benefits, non-profit, exposure to multiple cultures, annual international meeting to promote understanding and appreciation between host countries and in-coming students, witnessed the Managing Director continually grow the company. Too many to name. Great company.
|
Only one that comes to mind - busiest during the Summer. To me, not a drawback, but reality. Prepared for that time commitment and intensity.

Very Challenging and Rewarding
|
|
Their are two great reasons to work with ASSE. The first is to have a reason to get involved with your local community. If you enjoy working with others, especially teens, it can be phenomenal. The second reason is to make a difference with international diplomacy. The students successful stay is crucial to breaking down cultural barriers. Assisting students and families through the cultural and personal challenges can be very rewarding.
Out of town training can be earned or awarded. The training is fun, busy, and well catered.
|
One of the biggest challenges is working with a jungle of rules established by ASSE's contract with the Department of State and maneuvering the surrounding gray areas. This along with the learn as you go philosophy makes it very difficult for new and experienced people to feel secure in their dealings.
The training and marketing tools are basic and still a little old school. They are continuing to work on this.
The out of town trainings can be very difficult to physically manage due to the time requirements (early rise and late evenings).
As independent contractor/volunteer their are no "benefits" other than bonuses and trainings.
The pay is result driven and considering the nature of the work, your time is not always rewarded do to matters outside of your control.
The frequent change of area coordinators is difficult for coordinators and area reps (volunteers). It seems a waste of resources to have to start again from the bottom. This can also lead to some discrepancies in training and expectations.
Being on-call 24/7.

Training webinars and other online training tools for everyone; coordinators, reps, host families, and students.
Updating the main site, modernize.
Create a solid rep recruiting page/website.
Consider restructuring the regions. Perhaps, add a paid team leader in each small area to help organize recruiting efforts, mentoring, and to help build the culture of ASSE in their area. The team leader could encourage and foster working relationships between local ASSE reps.
It's difficult for people to "volunteer" to maintain school relationships and such and take the responsibility of leads without guaranteed pay for their time. I don't know if there's a good answer here.
