Lots of office politics and crushing bureaucracy
|
It's the kind of place where people are generally nice and low-key, but under the surface there's a lot of politics and bureaucratic inertia/craziness that prevent it from being a great place to work. Lots of unwritten rules without much logic behind them that suddenly become huge issues, out of the blue, based on the capriciousness of middle and upper management. It's hard to get anything done without jumping through numerous bureaucratic hoops.

Working for Associated Press means learning a new thing every day. It is easy to thrive and become better at the AP but it all depends on you. AP always wants to be ahead of its competitors making it a demanding job but once you get the hang of it, you are going to enjoy every moment of it. Nevertheless, It's not an easy career to fulfill and takes a serious journalist who is a professional and takes pride in what they do!

Some good, some bad

The good:
1. Always got paid on time
2. Paid time off
3. Includes helathcare and 401k
4. Having AP on your resume looks good
5. Good technology compared to other companies
6. Nice office in NYC
7. A lot of nice people to work with
The bad:
1. Unions control everything. A lot of cut backs, layoffs, and declining hours for employees because AP can't afford to keep up with the Union's high demands. The Union has hurt AP more than it has helped.
2. Appearance matters more than experience and skills. AP has quotas to hit with hiring. Even if you're more qualified and skilled than a minority or women worker, you probably won't get the job because they want to hire someone else and make a good impression on management.
3. Huge bureaucracy. The littlest things take so long. Have to go to your manager, then HR, then upper management, etc..
4. A lot Cliques. AP is HUGE for "it's not what you know, it's who you know." Every department has their favorites and close friends who get treated better. Sad, but true.
5. Upper management has no real vision on how to make money and turn profits. They don't like change at all. They make sure to take care of themselves.

The typical day (for me ) had great variation in a supportive technical/engineering role covering the entire building(approx 300 people),and a number of clients sharing the space. ... was not typical.. ie one never knew what was needed day to day.

Great People-support needs change daily like the news
|
All the local employees are very nice and supportive this included California and Nevada the area I covered. I learned a lot about covering events, sometimes high pressure because of breaking news and the timing of it. my managers were all really nice supportive and let me do my job the best way I know how / did not micromanage me !
I do have to say that New York is just the opposite. plus the company is run has a not for profit - because no one in upper management has a clue how to make a profit.
