There's also the chance to develop your skill sets here -- since it's a smaller org, you can help out wherever something interests you. I was surprised there were positive reviews, then noticed they're written the same day (sure that's a coincidence) so I thought I would share my opinion, as well! I had a very negative experience working here. I worked here right after school, so didn't have past jobs to really compare it to. I was initially payed as a contractor, though required to be on site, which I think might be illegal (i.e. I paid my own payroll taxes). I didn't have access to benefits until 2 months before I left (was there 5 years), and I increased my salary 54% at my next job -- I had no idea how underpaid I was. Also, the Executive Director was incredibly forgetful. I would be asked to do something then yelled at for it later. She was also very controlling, and unless I've been incredibly lucky with the jobs I've bad since leaving, a terrible manager. Work outside of the headquarters is interesting & useful to public media. Sue Schardt hires cool people. People who work here get exposure to lots of stations, organizations, & cool people in public media & don't have a hard time getting their next jobs, which is important becaaaaause ... It's a hard place to work. Sue Schardt's style is to be nice & generous to freelancers and hard on HQ staff after a honeymoon period. She forgets what she has promised or told people to do, is volatile, makes racist & sexist comments (like preferring not to hire women who have children), etc. A LOT of staff turnover at the two-year mark, and a lot of people who would leave public media rather than work there again. Be a freelancer out of the HQ office and you'll be fine. Unhealthy work environment on every front. Staff turnaround is a given. The organization is at the bleeding edge of what is changing in independent radio/audio/visual/multimedia broadcasting and storytelling and the team is always looking for new ways to innovate and help members and member communities innovate. Each work project bristles with creativity and collaboration and mutual respect — and teamwork is the foundation for it all. Deadlines can sometimes be hectic, but everyone is very supportive of each other. What has always been exceptional about the work environment at AIR is how truly diverse they are; whether it’s gender, race, sexual orientation, or any other descriptor, the common denominator among people working for AIR is talent, each bringing special skills that you get to learn from. Under the leadership of Executive Director Sue Schardt, and with input from her remarkable team, AIR has become a significant force, raising awareness, fostering up-and-coming talent, and expanding public media’s influence across the globe. For more than a decade, I have worked with AIR as an independent copy editor. It continues to be a positive experience in every way.
