Worst company to work for

401K contribution is 10% match which gets vested over the period of 4 years.
|
The people who stay at Astex are ones living in the East Bay or are waiting for the retirement. There is no respect for the individual contributors who actually do the work.
The Human Resource is the most useless I have ever encountered in any company I have worked in. They are just lazy and sycophants of the executives. They do not even care to talk to individual contributors.
Most of the managers / directors are like weasels either looking for their own benefit or waiting for the retirement.
So my advice to people thinking about applying is to just "run" and do not waste your time.

Not good for junior employees

I was responsible for some collaboration work with the parent and sister companies but did not get enough support from internal colleagues. Some managers told their subordinates to ignore instructions from their parent company. This made my work very difficult.
Processes and management in BDM, CMC and PK are very outdated. They keep telling people they don't need to be the same with other companies. I found this is an excuse not to catch up with industrial standards. They don't even know what the standards are in other companies. I could see some frustrated colleagues trying to bring in some good stuff but were rejected by their managers. Definitely not recommended for junior employees because you can't grow useful experience here.

Work life balance is good only because no one can take a deadline seriously and be productive.
|
Being a consultant and leaving soon - here are a few key points to notice:
Have a incredibly high turn-over rate - most leave within 1-2 years due to reasons below.
No collaboration within and across different groups in development.
Weak biometrics, PK, and safety groups - no one higher up seems to know how trials, submissions or safety is done according to today's standards.
Incompetence in directors and up - most have never seen a drug/study through approval/completed yet won't listen to those who have.
Severe favoritism and borderline discrimination in biometrics.
Lack of trust in employee's expertise and experience prevents them from doing their job.

Run productive meetings that start/stop on time and learn to table discussions as needed.
Have more VPs and Directors who are also competent managers - don't micro manage their jobs if you've hired them to do that job.
Allow for 360 reviews of managers. Many are getting away with horrible leadership, management and questionable ethics at times.
When you hire someone to do a job - let them do it - don't undermine and question every single thing - especially when the manager has no experience or knowledge in the subject.
Be aware how employees really feel - most really can't stand it here and constantly complain about how poorly ran and organized the company is.

Great opportunities with steady upward mobility. Coworkers are amazing. MDs are very approachable and fun to work with. Benefits are very competitive. 401K match is best I've seen. They continually evaluate the benefits to ensure they are the good. Small company feel invests you in the company and with the backing of a giant like Otsuka, there is stability. Its a pretty democratic like office environment. They listen to the majority and value input. Employees voted on if the office should be moved or not once the lease was up. Several situations like this have played out since I've been here and its been nice to have a voice. Pipeline is good and exciting. Compared to other places I've worked this is a keeper.

Although much better then other places, Astex still has some politics. Executive management sets goals that should be achievable but then eats up 2/3rd of the timelines going in circles deciding on the details of projects preventing preventing the teams moving forward. This makes it impossible to meet the goals within the timeline. The teams do everything possible in the small amount of time left to them to try and meet the greatest percentage of the goal possible. Even if its not intended to, it makes the teams feel like they are being set up to fail.

Nobody knows what they're doing. Inexperienced people at the top making bad decisions that cost the employees a lot of time and frustration in addition to costing the company $$$$ because they can't communicate and make decisions effectively. CSO decides at last minute to rework an entire FDA package b/c he won't participate in the team meetings leading up to the deliverable.
