The school does its best to encourage students to explore their interests; many people are invested in progressive politics, environmentalism, and making the world a better place. The proximity to the capital building (literally across the street) opens the door for engaged conversations about politics in the classroom. The town of Salem is cute and small and very family friendly (which may not suit singles who are looking for more of a city vibe). The bent toward progressive politics often means conservative students feel ostracized at best and demonized at worst. There needs to be space made for students across the political spectrum to test and try out their political beliefs without feeling like they may be punished socially or academically. If you are a racial minority, there is a greater chance you'll feel racially isolated. Overworked / underpaid staff. The Advancement / fundraising office has a big gossip culture. School is in debt so no raises for any staff.
