private:barringtonbroadcasting https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=230025 Sep 19th, 2012 12:00AM Open Open Barrington Broadcasting News Reporter Marquette, MI Awful place to start or finish your career It is a small market size (around 179 I believe) so it's a good way to get your foot in the door of the news industry. The Barrington station I worked at was WLUC in Marquette, Michigan. The pay is absolutely awful... barely enough to live on. I found myself working 50-60 hour weeks and making a set salary of $18,500 per year with no annual raise or bonus opportunities. Now, with no raise or other benefits, employees are forced to work 6 day weeks. I suppose legally they could be forced to work 7 day weeks, however it seems as if management is taking advantage of the reporters that are working so hard. The direction the newscast was heading when I left WLUC made me uncomfortable. It seems that the higher ups no longer care about strong news content. -1.0 NEGATIVE -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NO_OPINION 0.0 2.0 1.0 2.0 3.0 3.0 1.0 230025 Open Raise the salary a few grand for these hard workers. I'm happily working at a new station just 20 spots higher in the DMA making a salary of $23,500. It's not glorious, but it's livable. Plus I'm working 5 days per week and if I go over 40 hours I'll get overtime. The fact is working at WLUC made me seriously reconsider news journalism as a career. Thankfully not all stations operate the way WLUC does, or I'd be done. It's not all about the money, but when the money is that low, it makes an employee ask "What am I doing here?" 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 1.0 Jan 9th, 2021 09:48AM Jan 9th, 2021 09:48AM Barrington Broadcasting
