I work with incredibly smart people who are also kind, supportive, and fun. Leadership is conscientious and sincerely cares about employees. To succeed at Bendyworks you need to be self-motivated. This isn't really a con, but if you want strong direction you're not going to get it here. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 APPROVE 2.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 3.0 4.0 5.0 1332820 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 2.0 Jan 9th, 2021 09:59PM Jan 9th, 2021 09:59PM Bendyworks
private:bendyworks https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1332820 Jul 21st, 2016 12:00AM Open Open Bendyworks Software Developer Madison, WI Fun but problematic - I had fun most of the time that I worked at Bendyworks. - The people were great. - The work was interesting. - The clients are good to work with. - The management doesn't micro-manage you. - Craftsperson swaps (although the employee who used to organize them no longer works there) - Growth Days - There were problems with how they treated employees. (e.g., Women were told they were too emotional.) - Men who worked on open source software were hired without having to formally apply or really interview. - Men were consistently paid more than women. - Regular employees are responsible for a lot of how the company operates and were expected to both work full-time on client work as well as other initiatives (hiring, design, pro-bono projects, company events) which often constituted a second job. - Rules are rules until they end up against the favor of one of the co-owners. - There's little room for career advancement. Your option is to be a software developer or to leave. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 2.0 3.0 1.0 4.0 1.0 2.0 1.0 1332820 Open Hire a consultant to help with your HR problems. 0.0 [{"countHelpful": 0, "languageId": "eng", "userJobTitle": "CEO", "__typename": "EmployerResponse", "originalLanguageId": null, "id": 1347841, "responseDateTime": "2017-08-09T09:42:22.357", "translationMethod": null, "response": "Hi there! First of all, thanks to this person for writing this review. I don't know exactly who you are, but I'm always glad to get feedback on how we're doing.\r\n\r\nWhile I'm proud of the Pros listed, I feel like I should address some of the Cons. I think we've done a good job of addressing them since this employee left, which must have been in 2015 or earlier, since we didn't generate any \"former employees\" in the ~9 months prior to this review. I say this just so that you, the reader, can know that we've had even more time than what's apparent in order to address the issues listed here.\r\n\r\nSo! First point, \"Women were told they were too emotional.\" I know that I never said this, and I'd also say that anyone who said this now would be facing official consequences. That is not acceptable behavior here.\r\n\r\nSecond point about hiring without formal application: this only (kinda) happened once, and I'm sure gender had nothing to do with it. Furthermore, even though I know we ended up making the right choice for that individual, it's not something we'll do in the future.\r\n\r\nRegarding gender pay disparity, the reviewer apparently had an incomplete dataset, because I know this is not true. We've audited salaries for gender disparity, and it shows that our algorithm (which, yes, includes a small amount of subjective input) does not result in a bias.\r\n\r\nAs for the \"second job\" aspect, yeah.... that sucked. I'm sorry we ran the company like that. We have changed things such that employees can have a sustainable career here, and that any additional responsibilities replace (rather than add to) existing responsibilities.\r\n\r\nRegarding \"rules are rules until....\", I'll certainly admit that we did that sometimes. We've gotten so much better at that, with co-owners ensuring that policies are written down and followed by everyone, including ourselves. Yeah, we'll change them from time to time, but it's not without careful consideration and input from the team.\r\n\r\nAnd finally, regarding career advancement: it's fairly true. We're a small company, for which there are pros and cons. The lack of career advancement was a nontrivial reason why I left my last job to co-found Bendyworks, so I understand and empathize. If you want to stay a software developer, we're a great place to be. If you want to advance into management, we do plan to grow to allow for that... though the timeline on that is quite undefined.\r\n\r\nAnyway, again, thank you reviewer for your feedback. We have hired an HR consultant in the past, and will continue to re-engage one as we grow.", "responseOriginal": null, "countNotHelpful": 0}] REGULAR No No 2.0 Jan 9th, 2021 09:59PM Jan 9th, 2021 09:59PM Bendyworks
