Great Company with great people
The staff is incredible and the work produced is PHENOMENAL. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at BRT
There are some traditional theatre practices that need to go, but that is nation wide. Some of the hire ups don't quite understand how they are being problematic, but for the most part are willing to learn.

Best nonprofit theatre environment ever - still has stuff to work on
I worked in a great department that prioritized team building and employee personal and professional growth.
Low pay, long hours. Depending on your position, limited opportunity promotions. Experience can also vary wildly depending on your department.

Amazing Place to work...if there is work
great, caring management
fun work environment
supportive staff
If they are not building a show, there is no workâworks based on the season, so one can go 2-3 months with no job.

Always with best intentions, your experience at Berkeley Rep can vary widely
-Berkeley Rep always has the best intentions, and has found a sustainable middle ground of producing both established and unknown pieces of art.
-There are lots of committed, talented, fun people on staff.
-Depending on your department, you often get to work on interesting, unusual, challenging projects.
-Work / life balance can be fantastic for many employees.
-Extremely low compensation/benefits for 95% of the employees, considering the stature of the company, and the cost of living in the Bay Area. Even employees who worked there for 5-10 years would agree.
-Very little attention put on employee retention - management feels this is not really needed, as there is not a lot of competition in the area for the kinds of arts workers they employ.
-Can be a very rewarding place to work, if you are in the right position, love the art that is being produced, and are not concerned with the comp/benefits.
-Some departments (the ones that actually implement the shows) seem to often be completely overworked with no regard from management.

-Instead of justifying your employee compensation & benefits by comparing the company to other non-profit theaters around the country (where most of those companies provide close to the same comp, but the cost of living is often 1/5 or less than what it is the SF Bay Area), look at the reality of how much it would cost for someone to currently move to the area.
-Consider the overall organizational structure, and take a hard look at who actually should still in place. There are several positions that have helped the organization grow, and were key stakeholders 10 years ago, but now may not be necessary or fairly in-line with the rest of the company.
-If you want to retain the best specialty craftspeople, technicians, and managers, put attention on their value, and put their wage in line with their peers in the area.
-Strongly consider having an onsite HR manager who proactively works with all management and junior employees.

If you believe in the mission and like the plays, Berkeley Rep can be a great place to work
Collegial work environment and exciting shows. Some effort was made to provide staff with opportunities and resources outside of salary/benefits. Berkeley Rep can be great at retaining employees and finding different roles for them within the organization.
A cultural expectation of working long hours. Salaries are probably in line with other non-profit arts organizations, but are low given the cost of living. Executive leadership is not always in sync with lower level staff.

Mixed feelings
You learn a lot a from extremely talented people that work there. Coworker can typically be pleasant.
Decent benefits for managers
You'll learn a lot and contribute a ton, but it's not really affordable to work there long term. I felt like it was a good stepping stone, which was kind of a disappointment. They're at the pinnacle of regional theatre in the Bay Area and set their bars low when it comes to taking care of their employees. Work life balance completely depends on which department you're in. A lot of us felt like we don't deserve more despite working really hard and making Broadway Bound shows. Doesn't have an HR manager on site.

Take better care of your employees. Figure out if retirement for theatre workers will be truly possible in the bay area, or accept the turn around.

Minimum wage, no tips
Divided from rest of organization, no camaraderie outside of box office
Co-workers, management often bitter and jaded; rude to customers to their faces and behind their backs

Autocratic management, emphasis on appearance rather than substance even offstage
-There are some AMAZING, talented, dedicated, hard-working, supportive, and fun people that work at Berkeley Rep.
-Artistic Quality is usually very high; artistic vision strives to be daring and inclusive
-Positive national reputation
-If expedient, Management will act unethically (and at times pushes the envelope further) with a "we prefer to ask forgiveness than permission" approach
-When expedient, Management will select facts to justify policy/decision, rather than basing policy/decisions on all available facts/best practices; attendant lack of transparency/(meaningful) staff input on many issues
-Except for select staff, little effort put towards professional development unless employees apply for grants
-Values expressed publicly are not necessarily the values that inform decisions
-Low pay for junior staff with an "everyone is replaceable" attitude from Management
-Depending on the department you're in, your experience can vary GREATLY

Great experience
Dedicated and friendly coworkers. Learned a lot from doing and from those around me. Great productions. Wonderful art org on the whole.
Not enough room for growth in various departments or way to move to FT, but this is common in not for profit theater.

Invest more in the people with ideas willing to help grow the company. The pay isn't great, so the feeling you are a valued part of the whole has to be the motivator to stay.
