Backwards company doomed to fail
people are generally nice on the surface. There’s room to advance but only if you fit a very narrow mold (white and rich). Some people are genuinely fantastic and want to see you grow. Internships can lead to employment at the company or at least a good shoe in the door at other publishing houses. Heads of interns give very favorable and helpful letters of recommendation.
There’s a huge mistreatment of women of color. As a
White person, it was appalling to see management constantly put white employees up on a pedestal, while treating the women of color very differently. It seemed people of color in general had a very hard time at the company, and I’m not surprised if things haven’t changed. The racism is so apparent that I can safely say I’d never experienced such a racist workplace. There seems to be a lot of gossip and backbiting and false smiles. I found my manager to be very helpful but I observed some other interns who seemed to be facing constant criticism. In general the company lacks foresight or willingness to change with the times, and that’ll be what dooms it.

Listen to the people of color at your company. Stop favoring your white employees and learn how to give constructive compliments in addition to the criticism. Grow with the times or be left in the dust.

Very siloed departments, lots of cliques and feuds, and no clear career paths or mentoring of junior staff. As CEO not on-site, things fester for years. Time to sit down with department heads and change the culture.

Great Place to Work

I enjoy the collaborative atmosphere, everyone is informed on the things going on in the company, and all of the staff have a voice no matter the level. The benefits are great!
The collaboration can be time consuming, but once you learn the process the navigation becomes easier.

A supportive & deliberate work environment!
This company does a very good job at distributing the work and enabling employees to follow their passions and dreams. There is a real sense of community and taking all perspectives into account.
Sometimes I feel overworked. The only way to move up in the company is by fully adopting the culture of overwork, but that is probably exacerbated by my own predisposition to doing so.

Great Place to Work
The great thing about working at BK is the collaboration. We all work together towards the mission of "Connecting people and ideas to create a world that works for all"
We decide everything as a group, every policy in the employee handbook was voted on by every employee, the books we publish all get a vote, the company's future endeavors, even our salaries. BK values the staffs idea's, opinions, and suggestions. Since I have to work I'm so happy I get to do it in this environment.
The con is the flip side of the Pro. It takes time and skill to communicate all of the decisions we all make.

Lovely company, great management and leadership
- it's a smaller company, so everyone knows each other pretty well.
- they're all very willing to talk with you and tell you about their position/responsibilities
- you get to shadow who ever you want.
- they include you in staff meetings, and you sometimes even get to meet amazing authors
- CEO is a very nice, down to earth guy
- As an intern, your work doesn't have much impact on the company itself, and the tasks you end up doing aren't necessarily always invigorating

Company has fantastic ideals, but doesn't always live up to them
It's a small company with a friendly and warm atmosphere and beautiful office. The best part is getting to meet the enthusiastic and knowledgeable authors, who are a great source of continuing education and enrichment for employees. The company has an ambitious mission, "Connecting people and ideas to create a world that works for all," and all the books are organized around that theme. Getting to read all the books and study all the ideas makes working here very intellectually stimulating. The company is good at throwing community events that involve readers, authors, and other partners in interesting discussions.
The company has the ideal of getting more diversity in its author base, but it fails to invest significant energy, time, or money in that goal, and as a result is failing to broaden its horizons. I'm getting extremely tired of leadership books written by old white males. The company also has an ideological stance that hierarchies are bad- but in contradiction of that ideological stance, it has a normal hierarchical structure. Yes, the CEO pays himself less than the norm, and major decisions are openly discussed at all staff meetings, and all sorts of nice things-- but it's just a lie to pretend the organization is "flat" when it's simply a slightly shorter pyramid than normal. I've also been frustrated in trying to train myself on specific skills, I receive very little support, and have to beg busy people to explain things to me, which is very stressful.

We need to take a pro-active stand towards training employees instead of expecting the younger employees to 100% self-educate and beg for the attention & development they need from their older colleagues. We need to support innovation and diversity with actual investments of time, money, & energy, instead of just paying lip service. And we need to be pro-active about our non-hierarchical ideals, instead of just patting ourselves on the back for being slightly less terrible than a normal company.

An outstanding place to work
Highly egalitarian and flat structure. The CEO earns just a little over three times what the front desk person earns, which is unheard of in America. Everyone has an equal voice and this is a truly supportive culture -- so much so that during a downturn, the staff unanimously voted to take a salary cut across the top (entry level employees were not impacted) so that no one would need to be laid off.
It's easy to get spoiled and feel entitled after working here for many years (and I am guilty of this as anyone else). Sometimes it seems that the employees are not considered to be any more important than any of the other stakeholders which is a bit problematic because the focus on mission can get in the way of staying profitable. Also, a very boom or bust culture (which is publishing anyway so...)

Recognize that there are people who are not at the upper levels who have devoted their lives to this company but have financial concerns and insecurities about long-term financial stability. Stop setting aside almost all funding for independent projects and other pursuits and recognize the need for long-term financial security for those employees who are NOT as secure as those on the team and perhaps invest in something more stable than an employee stock ownership program that is highly volatile and not something to be depended on for the long run.

Great place to work, especially if you drink the Kool-Aid

Democratic and fair mission driven company. Small and easy to navigate. Community minded.
Limit on salary growth, top heavy management, prolonged decision making processes, no upside in the publishing industry and they have not yet figured out how to grow revenues based on current business model.
