An Opportunity to Get Your Foot in the Door

If you're just beginning your career in the advertising industry, this is a great company to learn the basics and build your foundation. The team you work with is filled with incredibly talented people. My position allowed me to work with multiple departments, and getting to know everyone on the team was definitely a highlight. The owner Melanie is also an industry expert, especially when it comes to media buying/planning. I worked for the company during COVID so I worked from home and never in the office. I was given a full computer set up for home which was very thoughtful. We had lots of video calls throughout the day which added some sense of normalcy to working from home, though the constant calling was excessive. Overall, the owners know how to employ very talented people who are passionate and resourceful, which is the fuel keeping their company alive.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest pros is also the biggest con. The company is great if you're just starting out and desperate to get a foot in the door. However, most employees get in and get out as soon as they have a bit of experience under their belt.
The hours are long (8:30-5 with often no lunch break), the work is monotonous, and the owners don't respect you. There's a high turn-over rate and employees don't last long. The owners refuse to treat their employees with basic respect and decency so there isn't much loyalty. For example, the owners had a habit of scolding/yelling at employees like children. I was once brought onto a video call purely to watch the owner reprimand my coworker for a simple mistake. This shouldn't be tolerated in the work place.
Also, the pay is barely above minimum wage, which is another side effect of being an entry level position. I'm not sure how much the higher level employees were making, but I was making just enough to cover my student loans, rent, and basic necessities. I'm so grateful I was able to find another job with more financial security.
Another important con to note is that the "culture" is dependent entirely on drinking. I swear the only jokes that were made during group meetings were how bad we wanted a drink after work. I get it, we've all been drinking more because of COVID. But when jokes like that are made everyday, they no longer are funny and can actually be quite harmful for someone struggling.
This all circles back to the fact that this company's ideal employee is a recent college grad who is eager to learn and willing to work. Once you give them a few months, maybe a year, they'll spit you out and find someone who is willing to be paid less and work more.

You have all the tools to be an awesome agency. Your employees are talented, you as the owner have a wealth of industry knowledge, and you have deep roots in Pittsburgh's community. It's time to turn inwards and invest in your team. Maybe it was the stress of COVID and the insane year that 2020 has been, but management needs to be kinder to their employees. Respect and decency go a long way. I'm a firm believer in the saying "it's not what you do, it's who you work for." I was terrified of them, of when I would be yelled at next. Of the sly digs and subtle insults. No employee should have to feel this way about their employer. I understand if your response to my review is that I'm being "too sensitive" or maybe that I should toughen up for this industry, but I want people to know that you will need a tough skin to make it a long time at this company.

The people are great and the location is ideal if you enjoy working downtown. The parking is a perk, it’s a short walk to the office.

Poor management. Very micromanaging, manipulative and they can careless about your time. Will most likely come late to all meetings if they even show. Team bonding events are a lot of fun but don’t happen every Friday or even one Friday a month, it’s basically a quarterly event. Monday morning meetings are the worst start to a Monday.
