Great industry experience, but not ideal intern experience
|
|
- Personally, I was given a lot of work to do relating to my position
- Staff is mostly friendly and welcoming to the interns
- Weekly all-intern seminars with guests from different departments are a great opportunity to learn the inner workings of a record label
|
- Minimum wage pay (which, in Tennessee, is abhorrent)
- Limited work hours
- The combination of the two above points makes it extremely difficult to for out of state interns to earn money during the summer. I had to find housing and was only allowed to work 20 hours a week - once I accidentally worked a single extra hour and was made to come in late the next day so as not to pass the 20-hour limit
- Dealing with HR was not easy. I was regularly paid incorrectly, and the HR employee manually tallied intern hours from a spreadsheet, which I'm assuming lead to the calculation errors.
- The majority of other interns I spoke to said they had very little work to complete. Radio Promotions, Creative, and Operations seemed to be the departments that gave interns the most work
- Many departments were not inclusive of interns in meetings or events, so you are not given much of an opportunity to become part of the company/experience the company culture

Exceptionally disappointing

Some great and talented co-workers.
|
The most dishonest, incompetent and conniving HR imaginable... “forgets” to do her job, like making sure people are paid, can sign up for insurance, expenses are paid or making sure 401k contributions are posted.
She does make sure to contact everyone in the company to dictate their CMA voting though. That she’s in top of.

Innovative Company With Passionate People
|
|
The people at Big Machine are motivated, thoughtful, forward thinking, and passionate about the work they do. It is a family, and I feel empowered by my coworkers to continuously learn and grow both professionally and personally.
|
It is important to note that it is not a typical 9 to 5 job and more of a lifestyle. You have to be passionate about the work you are doing, have time management skills, and the ability to prioritize.

Exceptional entertainment company with a start-up energy
|
|
-Everyone is encouraged to bring forth ideas, no matter what level or department you are in
-CEO and COO are very visible and involved on projects
-Company is independent so you can move fast on ideas/execution i.e. not a lot of red tape in order to be effective
-Great benefits, including insurance and bonus compensation, 401k, free meals and lots of access to high profile events
-Employees and senior staff welcome diversity
-Opportunity to meet so many music industry executives and artists from all over the world
-
|
-Everyone is very competitive and holds a "winning" mentality which can sometimes make it hard to juggle a work/life balance, but mostly this is self induced, not necessarily expected from the top/senior management
-Not a place for people who don't like to speak up or are not into the music business 24/7 lifestyle...you will not succeed if you are not a self-starter

Great Place To Work!
|
|
Big Machine has so much to offer its employees: amazing benefits, a strong & highly involved executive leadership team, and experiences that you could only dream of. If you want to work with the best of the best, be pushed farther and harder than you could have ever imagined, and want to have fun at the same time, Big Machine Label Group is the place you want to be.
I have worked at Big Machine for over 5 years. I came into the company with a background of already working in entertainment and was in awe of how hard working & dedicated everyone was within the company. Scott Borchetta leads by example. And he expects all department heads to do the same. He is quite possibly the hardest working person at the company. I was initially brought in at a manager level but was promoted to an executive position at about the two-year mark. Big Machine absolutely promotes from within and I am proof of that. Get your foot in the door, work harder than you ever have, and you will be recognized for your work. Big Machine also has a world class internship program. Many of my co-workers have began their (very successful) careers as a Big Machine intern.
As a female, I can 100% say that all employees are treated fairly and with the utmost respect. My opinions are heard and valued just as much as my male counterparts. In a male dominated industry (IMO), I feel Big Machine is extremely ahead of the curve when it comes to having senior level women executives at the decision-making table. Scott tells us all the time, he doesn't care where the idea comes from, he just expects us to participate. Everyone works with the same vision in mind - success. Despite the multiple imprints under the Big Machine umbrella, we work to support all of our artists - it does not feel divided - we want all of our artists to be as successful as possible.
Also, we have fun year end retreats, extremely generous PTO allotments, and flexible work schedules. Scott and the rest of his office go above and beyond for all of us. I have really enjoyed the open-door policy that Big Machine encourages. Andrew Kautz, the COO, is someone who juggles so much and so many departments, but if you need him, he is there for you.
And finally, the fun stuff! Big Machine has put me at the same table with entertainment legends. Experiences that you couldn't buy a ticket to (or even dream of) - that is what Big Machine offers. We are expected to work hard, but when the time comes to celebrate our accomplishments, we are allowed (and encouraged) to do so.
|
Working at Big Machine is a lifestyle, not a 9 to 5 job. If you aren't willing to work long hours (when needed) or devote some of your personal time to your career, this isn't the job or place for you. (And that's ok).

Not worth the hype
|

Music Industry, snacks, good music.

Many insecure people in high position. Will not post jobs. Little room for upward movement in the company. Lousy pay unless you're at the top of the latter.

Depends on the department
|
|
If you're really passionate about the country music business, this is the place for you. Some departments are doing good and innovative work and there are a few really great department heads and executives. Some traditional perks of music industry jobs like parties, swag, etc. You'll make lots of connections and it's a pretty impressive line on your resume.
|
The work/life balance is not great for most people, which makes the terrible pay feel even worse and causes burnout. Some departments have toxic culture and communication.

Some of the executives should be more open to suggestions made by the younger employees because they are more in tune with what gets younger audiences interested. If you're going to overwork your most passionate employees, you should compensate them better so that they don't become bitter. Music industry perks won't keep them around forever.
