Company has no KPIs, no structured processes, and last year the turnover rate was about 50%. It looks like the turnover rate at the end of this year will be absurd as well. Some leadership has been accused of extremely inappropriate and unprofessional behavior but they turn a blind eye and even admit to others that they are aware of the accusations. Overall, steer clear if you are looking for a career that will last longer than 6-18 months. Toxic hostile work environment driven by board members (company direction is not managed by the CEO or executive team, with the lone exception of a sycophantic right hand VP.) No women work at the executive level or on the board, and none stay long in positions of power. Those who express opinions, ask for appropriate recognition, or insist on doing things the right, compliant, or legal way are quickly cut off at the knees via reassignment, demotion, or "layoff." Several men received significant promotions rapidly or were hired in at levels not reflected by experience or skill set. Such layoffs come almost quarterly and are never actually layoffs, but attempts to replace those who landed on the "bad side" of the board or their buddies. They would prefer to arbitrarily fire employees but does not have cause. Often friends or family of board members are waiting in the wings to assume the "eliminated" positions. Any human error, disagreement, or questioning is seen as a personal affront. One board member carries a hitlist of those who've offended and regularly badmouths them to other employees. "Strategy" changes every couple of months and no one seems to have a workable vision. Very much 'throw it against the wall and don't take the time to see if anything sticks.' Conflicts of interest are rampant. Subpar vendors kept on retainer or brought in for consulting are from other companies where the chairman has financial interests. Most of the senior leadership and board are significantly invested in the company, and are too close to effectively operate. Financial performance is poor at best and questionably legal at worst. Sales is given free reign to quote any price for custom products, and deals barely break even while operations is constantly jumping to deliver services that were sold, but never previously implemented. In less than a year, five senior level finance and accounting staff quit. Compliance issues abound. No reliable systems or processes exist, so everyone is constantly firefighting and manually doing work that could easily be automated. This place is a sparkly sinking ship. The employees are nice people. Everyone is really trying to do a good job. But, management, the executives, and the CEO are all at the mercy of the chairman. If you say something he doesn't like, you're out. If you stand up for what's right, you're out. I thought this place would be a great place to grow your career. I was wrong. After three months there you will figure out that the people that are happy either have little involvement with the chairman or they are on his good side. I have never been at a private company where the chairman of the board is there every day and even has an office there. He walks around intimidating people. It is a hostile work environment. There are many talented people but their ideas and thoughts are crushed by the chairman of the board. Most people are nice; office space is nice. Leadership asks Managers to implement policies, structure, accountability, but when it is done they expect you to make exceptions for certain people. Day to day activities included data entry, information management and processing. Collating and handling voluminous yet sensitive personal data on a daily basis required attention to detail and discipline. Colleagues were always extremely helpful and created a positive working environment. California is a wonderful place to work, and I hope to bring the typical enthusiasm and strong work ethic into any job here in Scotland. The hardest part of the job was maintaining high levels of concentration whilst undertaking often repetitive tasks. Due to the nature of the work, simple mistakes could be costly. However, having had this experience I now have an acute attention to detail, and am able to work efficiently, even when the work is repetitive. There have been several series of layoffs over the pat 3+ years, which causes job uncertainty throughout the entire office and causes a huge disruption within the company in terms of production. There is lack of management and career development for the majority of each department.
