I'm not sure where all the negative reviews came from at all! Maybe they really changed a lot of things in the past couple of years, but my experience hasn't been negative whatsoever. The management is flexible and friendly, and they make an incredible effort to make sure everyone on the team, no matter how small their role, feels like they are making an impact and feels included in everything happening at the company. I held a junior technical writing role, and I still felt like I was included in the important conversations and that everyone made a very real effort to let me know that my contributions mattered. There is no silent invisible unappreciated role here--everyone knows everyone, and everyone appreciates everyone. Further, Phil Schmitz is one of the most genuinely warm and approachable CEOs I've ever met. Just because he's busy and works hard does not mean he will brush you off if you ever need to talk to him, and he makes an active effort to show appreciation even to the smallest staff. CEOs are usually going to be tough people, but I cannot believe there are reviews saying that he is verbally abusive! I have never once witnessed this, and I feel like if anything, the people who work here care so genuinely about the customers and the product that if you care less, then yes, you might feel excluded and like things are a little tough. That's the price for how much passion there is here. Employees participate in their clients' events without being asked, and it really does feel like everyone gives 110%--if you don't, you're an outlier. There is no room for slackers, and that's a GOOD thing! The growth in such a small company is, of course, going to be limited, but they really do try their best to give you opportunities where they can. I as a technical writer was put on multiple projects with proposals and marketing simply because I expressed an interest in it, and they really tried to work with me to help me grow within my position however they could, even if what they could do was a little limited. I couldn't have asked for a better boss to report to, and I couldn't have asked for a better team to work with. The Friday lunches bring everyone together, and we love excuses to bring in cake and go out after work. They provide a lot of free coffee, tea, and workplace snacks. As far as the product itself goes, it is innovative, smart, powerful, and growing more every day. It was a privilege to get to work with it and know that you get to work on the cusp of something that powers so much good. The benefits are incredible. I got a very generous vacation accrual rate, and they provide free healthcare for singles. Also, for the others complaining about their pay rate, I can only personally say that my pay was very fair. I gave them a salary range I would be comfortable with, and they paid me the highest end of what I asked for when they didn't have to. If they wanted to skimp out on pay, I was a prime example of being able to, and they chose not to. Their ethics are very strong, and they are putting new effort into growing the company. I cannot honestly sing their praises enough. I got this job right out of college, and you know, the real world is scary to jump into. I could have easily fallen into a job where the company didn't care, but I got lucky enough to work here. I will always be thankful for my good experience here, and I wish the company so much growth and success. They deserve it! There really were none for me. If I had to grasp, I would say that maybe you guys should leave the dog home a little more often--he's smelly and disruptive, albeit very sweet. I got an excellent view of the company from the eyes of an extremely junior position, up to one with management responsibilities as I ran a cold-call unit. I was in a prime position as an intern to be disrespected or disregarded. My experience could not have been more positive. I am flabbergasted to see such harsh reviews of BIS Global, a place and people that gave me so much. I think it is worth noting that most of the negative reviews coincide with the firing of an employee. The vindictive, somewhat dramatic language leads me to question the motives for writing a review. To be clear, I have not lived the individual experience of every former employee, all I can report on is my own experience. The vague, spite-filled condemnations of the CEO, and general lack of specific measurable complaints leads me to question the intent of the reviewers. The notion that the workplace was toxic is most absurd to me. Both my team of interns and I thrived, felt welcome, and respected. We worked hard and never had a thing to complain about. I would happily and publicly defend this company, management team, and employees if given the chance. I appreciated how my ideas and suggestions were listened too, even though I started as an intern. I was given incredible opportunities, provided I was willing to put in the work and execute. This helped me learn, have a sense of pride in my work, and feel like a much bigger part of the team. The passion the executive team displayed for the product, mission, and company itself was quite inspirational. I never felt like my superiors were treating BIS Global as just another company or just another job. The product and technology is cutting edge. Getting to work on the bleeding edge of innovation was exciting. I personally never experienced any significant issues during my time at BIS Global, not one. Some have complained about certain management styles or interactions with executives, but I could not have asked for a better team to report to. Despite spending much of my employment as an intern and junior member of the company, I was respected and valued at all times. At certain times I wish significant events at the company where shared slightly more rapidly and transparently. The departure of a longtime employees used to be shrouded in secrecy, and it created an environment where rumors flew. The people I worked with were still the highlight and the reason I made light of things that took place during the time I was there. Tons of talented minds that really appreciated working together, and my hope things can finally turn around culturally. I hope to hear that you continue to focus on building a safe and open environment for your employees. Other staff that remain have told me you took some steps to make improvements. Please don't settle, and continue to foster that level of culture. It's not something to take likely, as you know from my previous review. Awesome cookouts and Jackson (the company mascot) was fun to have around the office. Worked with some great, hardworking, smart folks, who I respect a lot. But the upper management, not so much. Not a very women friendly company, in my opinion. There is a very low ratio of men to woman, and all of the woman that worked there while I was employed, were either fired or quit on unfriendly terms, including myself. My pay was below industry standards for my position, according to Glassdoor salaries. I was promoted on the first day, but never given a raise to compensate for the added responsibilities. I was told there would be stock options, but never received any, even though I found out after I left, that other employees at my level (men) were given them. I was let go under false pretenses, accused of misconduct and denied unemployment benefits. It was only after I appealed, were the misconduct charged redacted. No hardworking, honest and dedicated employee should be subjected to unethical treatment, despite race, sexual orientation, and gender or other. I am sorry to say, but that was my personal experience and opinion. Be honest in your dealings with clients. Do not offer products and services that do not exist and expect them to be happy when they find out they were over promised and under delivered. I am not a member of the management team and I have not been asked or felt any influence whatsoever to write this post. I felt morally obligated to share my thoughts and views about the company I work for since there have been a couple opportunistic and disgruntled ex-employees posting here recently. Personally, I really enjoy working for BIS Global/CharityEngine. The biggest benefit of working here is most definitely the people. We have constructed an incredible team of intelligent and hardworking people who all work towards one common goal, helping non-profits raise money towards their missions. I take great pride in the work I do because if not directly, indirectly we are helping people in so many different ways. My job as Principle Software Engineer is to both write the software and help enable the rest of my team to do the best job possible. I can’t speak more highly of the engineering team we have put together here and together we put out a pretty awesome product to our customers. If you are an engineer and you like a fast-paced, exciting, and fun environment to work in… CharityEngine is the place for you. On top of all that, we also have some pretty great benefits like a fully stocked kitchen, Monday catered breakfasts, and Friday catered lunches. If there is anything we as engineers enjoy, it’s free food! In terms of upside potential, we as a company and a development team and growing rapidly and there are a number of opportunities for growth in either management or technical roles. I gave the company 4 start because, as with any small company, there are some things we are still working on making better. We have had some mishaps in management and in terms of some processes that we are putting in place as we grow, but the first step is acknowledging that there is room for improvement and as a team we have done that. Other than that, at least on the engineering side we do work a little more than your typical 8 hour days, as is pretty common in small companies. I worked at BIS Global for 2 years in an exciting capacity where I enjoyed my interactions with clients the work I did and my coworkers. I will say I made some great friends at this job with awesome people, and I became more skilled and faster at what I do, certainly bonuses for me personally. The Office space is awesome and the coworkers and clients are great to work with. Everyone on staff is committed to excellence and giving 110% everyday. The software itself is improving and the overall idea is great. I have been in the non profit tech space for a long time and I can tell you there is no perfect place. Every organization has its pitfalls. My experience at BIS global was unique and too many emotions to express in this review. The software is certainly improving. This is a great idea and the company has hired great people but it seems that they do not know how to manage their people or manage themselves. After two years of service I saw a lot. Mistreatment of staff (sexist and bullying).When a staff member leaves the organization they are belittled and blamed for existing problems. This also correlated to clients.Client deployments are often not thoughtful in the sales process and hardly anything is in 'scope' ultimately setting the client services and implementation teams up for failure. The technology is decent and those that work to maintain/improve it work very hard. The breakfasts and lunches are a nice perk. The executives were extremely difficult to work for. One was yelling in the office on almost a daily basis, and another constantly presented an attitude of being totally disinterested in anything anyone else had to say. Please don't be fooled by Leigh's efforts to respond to negative reviews, most of what he said is false, especially the part about employees being dismissed after given opportunities to improve. At least one employee received a positive performance review shortly before being terminated with absolutely no warning. Executives explored every avenue to cut costs at the expense of the staff, but never their own. I also witnessed clients being made fun of often, and former employees were vilified. Bonuses were promised and then never delivered. The executives drank in the office during work hours to the point where one would wonder about a serious drinking problem. There is no sense of work/life balance at all. You cannot be a sensitive person and be successful here. You will be yelled at, talked down to, and disrespected, especially if you are female and/or not white. Low-ball you - Horrible work/life balance: Senior management mostly worked 6-7 days a week and somehow expected the same from their salaried employees. You were, informally, expected to work more than 40 hours a week regardless of your positions. - No policies and procedures: There was no reinforcement of the rules the company had established and some I would even consider as illegal. This also caused a very hazardous atmosphere in the office. - Treat everyone fairly: Sexism did exist during the time I was there - female workers were looked down and treated unfairly (i was not a female, but I saw it all). - Don't be pretentious. One of the reviews mentions that upper management often made fun of their clients behind their backs and I can attest to that (despite the fact that we mostly served non-profit organizations). We, as employees, could also sense that vibe and it really wasn't pleasant to have to fake a smile to keep your job. - Knowing how to code is not everything: Different departments exist for a reason and not everyone should know how to code. I've seen my peers tasked with crazy assignments (receptionist was asked to install and configure database for a client as a *learning opportunity*), which was totally out of the line. If you did not know how to code, you were not likely to be considered as "smart" and this directly affected your promotional and career chance. I learned a lot from this company but can honestly say that I've never looked back on my decision. The good simply did not outweigh the bad. I'm now at a much better company where I'm treated with respect, my opinions matter, and what I do feels truly meaningful for the company's success and my personal development.
