The company do care about the well-being of their staff. The company is extremely old fashioned in everything they do. The building, the culture, the status quo. Management are very middle class and this transcends onto staff members, who are afraid to be themselves, as for worry of being looked down upon. There’s a very much ‘head down’ mentality among staff members when with each other’s. Little to no interaction. Members of my team were not team players, very cliquey and will try to pit you against other members of staff and if you don’t want to play ball so to speak, they will turn on you and try and make things uncomfortable for you. BMJ UK is a good organization. BMJ India however is a different story. First, right from the recruitment phase, they will identify weak, vulnerable people, who will anyway be in need of employment - the management [India Managing Director] has openly encouraged this strategy in meetings saying these people are needy. They somehow think this gives them leverage - a vulnerable person is more likely to tolerate whatever is thrown their way because they are dealing with a lot in their life already. The Managing Director has never provided vision and clarity - mostly peddling stuff copied from the internet - it's funny actually. Respect the staff that you have are intelligent and provide them real leadership. We recently did a 360 degree appraisal at an offsite, & the staff openly shared what they thought of him - no change in him whatsoever. Shameful ! While I appreciate cost-cutting is important, the cost cutting measures here are another level altogether - if they can get away by cheating staff of even 1 rupee / or 80 cents, they can and they will - and then gloat about it. Don’t believe me? Use LinkedIn to check in with any former employee of BMJ India. The sales team is deliberately misguided - people routinely cross over into each other’s territories, because no clarity is provided, in the hope that they will fight amongst themselves. The only mission that the India Managing Director has is to further his own agenda - Revenues are not growing, creating pressure on staff. The India HR is a joke. So in case you have a toxic manager, you can't even go to the HR. The HR is a powerless, useless function, only given to doing things at the behest of the India Managing Director. In what situations should you accept an offer If you have nothing else in hand and need something to pay the bills. Don’t look for work-life balance. Work 9-5 as per your role. I cannot believe that you are unable to find a better individual focused on growth to lead the organization in India. I have worked more than 6 years starting from its inception. I haven’t seen any leadership acumens in BMJ India. That could be well portrayed from the stagnant turnover BMJ is into for the last one decade. BMJ India MD never took the pain of understanding why sales were not growing organically. Management blames sales team of been incompetent without realzing the core problem they are facing with customers. Finally, BMJ India management will come to a conclusion that your role is no longer required in the organization and suddenly you become redundant as management wants to cut down cost, as they cannot meet the bottom line. My immediate colleagues were nice and like minded. Due to industry shift from subscription based revenue to pay to publish model and company culture stuck in the past this is a sinking ship. Mid level managers petty inability to accept anything resembling contradiction to their way of thinking.
