Promises, promises and more promises
|
|
Great people to work with.
Remote working.
Nice laptops and goodies.
|
Lot of overtime, the only way to reach impossible deadlines on time.
Many features are promised to customers without any planning or agreement with engineering and that turns into a nightmare for engineers that have to push to production mere prototypes.
On call is a nightmare, this is related with my previous point. Those features rushed to production make the system more unstable each iteration.
Management doesn't care or even try to listen to the feedback they get, they're too busy promising more things to customers AND employees.
Training budget is something they offer to employees... Or at least that's what they say.
After requesting some budget for AWS training several times without answer I can say that budget didn't exist in my case.

Just another job
|
|
- People
- Flexible hours
- WFH
- AWS with decent
|
- feature factory, no long term vision
- priorities are changing weekly, sometimes daily
- selling features even before they're planned and then engineering pushed to deliver
- based on legacy code that has the data model hard coded, hard to maintain and to extend for other industries

Engineering-Focused Solutions Company on an Upward Trajectory

Excellent place to work.
Real sense of company integrity.
Feels like consistently moving in the right direction with the leadership team.
The product is excellent and a joy to work with.
Really satisfying working with large customers and international stakeholders.
Real sense of domain expertise when talking to any staff member for advice.
|
No current pension scheme (though it's on the way).
Time management system could be improved.
Work/life balance isn't perfect, but that might be down to the pandemic more than anything else.

Better going elsewhere
|
|
Location very near to DART station and city center, nice office layout and a good engineering team (mostly). Occasional events outside the office can be fun too.
|
Not rewarding overall, much better offers can be easily found elsewhere, with better compensation and conditions. There's a lot of competition for talent in Dublin, and unless you try to match what is offered elsewhere people are going to continue to leave.

It can be difficult to compete with the best in the market, but unless you try you will have a revolving door of skilled people leaving, with unskilled people coming in to get trained, disillusioned and leave too. Saving a few bucks by not competing with the typical market compensation will lose 10x that in capability.

We work hard to improve in everything that we do - so we always appreciate feedback - good and bad. \r\n\r\nWe've a great engineering team, working on some really interesting challenges and delivering incredible results. Dublin is a competitive market for tech talent and we pay all of our performers competitive salaries. Those who thrive working for a scaling company like Boxever are motivated as much by the opportunity to make an impact and the challenge as much as they are about salary. I recognise that this isn't the environment for everyone - and that\u2019s OK. We do consciously hire a balance of experience and those who aren\u2019t yet the finished article. Not competitive with other companies
|
|
Nice office in the city center, with the usual start-up perk (games, food, beers etc.).
|
The best talent in the company is leaving for better paying roles in the industry. Salaries and benefits are about 30% to 40% lower than the industry average, so why would you not just go elsewhere, and get things like inclusive health insurance, travel incentives, and shares that are actually worth money. Thinking back, one of my biggest gripes was my partner (in a similar tech company) getting annual share awards worth thousands, while the paltry share offering provided, touted as "a fantastically generous offer" [exact quote] wouldn't even buy your weekly groceries. Overall, when dealing with management, you feel deceived a lot of times, or at minimum that you're not being told the entire picture. This creates a level of distrust, and again was a major factor in deciding to leave.
