Everyone here is exceedingly kind and truly cares about coding carefully/maintaining the codebase as well as perfecting the final product. I would say the general vibe is laid back but get the work done. Working at Brainium requires you to be self motivated and self directing. If you can't do that this place is not for you. 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 1322109 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 1.0 Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Brainium Studios
private:brainiumstudios https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1322109 Jul 27th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Brainium Studios Software Engineer Portland, OR The coolest company ever Tons of autonomy, and no micromanagement whatsoever. You can come and go as you please, wear whatever your heart desires, and cover your desk with lots of tchotchkes. The office is stylish and homey, with cute potted plants and a beautiful view. There's fully paid-for team lunches every Friday (though not currently, given the pandemic) where you can bond with your teammates and feel self-conscious about ordering $20 worth of sushi. Everyone's super friendly, and you'll truly feel like you're part of a growing family of vibrant individuals. If you want to work with people who're wholeheartedly dedicated to quality and who love to be themselves and have fun together, then working here is a dream come true. You have to be self-driven and take initiative. If you need something, you need to reach out and make things happen yourself. That includes being proactive about communication! If you lose heart and don't keep on top of that, it's easy to isolate yourself and not get what you need. However, a support structure is actively growing, i.e. biweekly 1-on-1s with the Engineering Manager. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 5.0 4.0 1322109 Open Keep doing your best to grow and strengthen leadership! 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 2.0 Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Brainium Studios
private:brainiumstudios https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1322109 Jul 24th, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Brainium Studios United States USA A great place to work and grow NO crunch, ever. Huge emphasis on learning. Great benefits. But, most importantly, Brainium cares: about players, employees, and the company; I've never worked somewhere that cared so much about each individual employee, fostering the culture, and respecting the players of the games. Team members are expected to be self starting and be able to do work without necessarily be asked to or assigned it. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 0.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 1322109 Open Keep thoughtfully hiring great new talent and empowering folks to become leaders in the company. 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 6.0 Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Brainium Studios
private:brainiumstudios https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1322109 Feb 21st, 2020 12:00AM Open Open Brainium Studios Portland, OR Awesome Culture, Fun Environment, Great Games Great pay and benefits, especially for such a small company. The fun and excitement of a young startup, with the stability and security of a successful, stable business. Fun, genuine culture and office environment. Amazing work/life balance and flexibility. Working in one of the most competitive and interesting segments of the mobile gaming industry. Rapidly changing priorities inherent to a small, dynamic tech company. Less formalized project management than some may be used to. High level of trust and autonomy requires employees to have good initiative and be able to work and make decisions independently. 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 POSITIVE 1.0 5.0 5.0 5.0 4.0 5.0 4.0 1322109 Open 0.0 [] REGULAR No Yes 1.0 Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Brainium Studios
private:brainiumstudios https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=1322109 Apr 9th, 2017 12:00AM Open Open Brainium Studios United States USA Decent company but needs better Project Management - Good pay - Great health plan and exceptional parental leave policy - Fair amount of PTO and sick days - Some flexibility in hours / working from home - Small company with good people, no bad eggs here - Strong focus on code quality over getting things out the door quickly, very anti-overtime. - Management has no concept of long term planning or deadlines. Projects drag on with very incremental progress, with no definitive end in sight. You are assigned tasks with no idea how long you should take on them, and little feedback if you met expectations for them. - Design-as-we-go mentality. Expect to spend time developing a feature with production level code, just to get a task to remove it or radically change it next week. - Lack of communication from managers. It was often confusing what the company priority was. For example we would spend a few weeks doing infrastructure updates and suddenly one day we would shift right into working on a new game. I was often not given tasks to work on and would have to message the manager or hunt for an open ticket to work on. Which leads me to... - Miserable project management. We had one big list of tickets for everything related to a project; this included things like bugs with repro, bugs that happened once and have no repro yet, vague feature ideas, feedback with no action items, features that had action items but didn't have art yet, art/design tasks that had no programming component, tickets that are months old and no one knows what to do with...you get the point. This was all in one big unsorted list. It was a mess. - Imbalance of programmers to artists (I believe it was 8 programmers to 1 artist / designer when I left) leads to an having little to work on at times - Very little in terms of culture / fun. Outside of a weekly lunch on Fridays there were almost no company activities. The office itself is as quiet as a library, many days the only words exchanged were "good morning" and "see you tomorrow / have a good weekend". - No room to grow. Expect a small salary bump each year if you meet expectations, but nothing more. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 0.0 3.0 5.0 3.0 2.0 5.0 2.0 1322109 Open Please learn proper project management discipline, it will greatly increase efficiency and employee happiness. Deadlines (or at least milestones) are important! Your employees are valuable, make sure to take them out sometimes and have some fun. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 0.0 Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Jan 11th, 2021 03:50PM Brainium Studios
