London has a great working environment but the company is terrible for DEI and career progression

- The London newsroom has a great working environment, and this is definitely and mainly because of fellow reporters making it a great place to work.
- Reporters in London, make coming into the office worth it, as they are open and honest about the industry and the company as a whole.

Business Insider claims that it is a diverse environment and they really care about Diversity, equity and inclusion, when they really don't. Diversity efforts in the UK are in fact led by HR and a team of white women, who have never really taken into account how minorities in their newsroom are feeling. Any real concerns expressed by minorities have either been shut down by HR and the Managing Editor team or, have been met with hostility.
Business Insider, as a newsroom is also quite unstable as a newsroom and as a result career progression within the newsroom is not taken seriously. Boundaries for progression have been constantly pushed back, especially for minority staff members, who are constantly undermined. This has been the case on various occasions and as a result their POC staff retention is quite low, and the recent lay offs in London, are a prime example as they affected either POC and women editors and journalists.
The fellowship program is also a way to get low paid labour. Fellows are barely paid London living wage despite technically doing the same work as full-time reporters. The way how management in the US treats fellows towards the end of their fellowship is abysmal. Fellows were treated as numbers rather than actual people by senior management in the US. Despite Business Insider telling fellows at recruitment stage that they would get plenty of notice if they are not being kept on, this is far from the case. In some instances fellows were told that they were not being kept on on their last week. In one instance fellows were told they were not being kept on, only to be told that they are on their very last day.
Bottom line, it is not a great place to work if you are minority and if you are a fellow looking for an early career opportunity.

Business Insider has a tenancy to talk about their employees being 'good eggs', but it is a bit difficult for senior management to retain these 'good eggs', if they are so far removed from what is happening on the ground, especially in the London bureau. Maybe start paying attention to how editorial staff currently have low motivation and drive, and see what needs to be changed in order to retain these 'good eggs' and talent.
- Having token minorities as part of London senior management and ERGs which are just for show, does not really help solve the lack of diversity and inclusion in the London bureau.
- Treat fellows with a bit more dignity and respect. They maybe early in their careers but make up a big part of Business Insider.
- Have clear career paths highlighted.
